Garth: "You're not the same Scott that's on r.m.c.w., are you?" Scott: "Oh, no....he would be carrying a big cream pie and frozen pina coladas...Garth, one of the things I'd like to do is convince everyone that you're not greedy, and you care about country music and its fans so much." Garth: "Sounds great, I could use that." Scott: "I'd like to start with your
efforts to put an end to used music sales. You see, people not only
felt they had the right to sell something they had bought..." Garth: "the *nerve* of them!" Scott: "and no longer had a use for,
but also, there was this big issue: The vast majority of music ever recorded
was out of print. If people were restricted to buying everything new,
there would be such a vast amount of music never to be heard again.
I would like to address this issue first..." Garth: "What do you mean? You mean all the music that's ever been recorded isn't readily available new? And what does it matter if it's not MY music anyway?" Scott: "Umm...maybe I'll just sweep that whole thing under the rug." Garth: "Yeah, that's what I’m trying to do." Scott: "Next, let's move on to your 'reorganization' of Capitol Nashville. Some people thought that selling 4 million albums was plenty, and to get someone fired in hopes your new album would sell more was ruthless, greedy, and brutal." Garth: "Well you see, that was for Scott Hendricks' own good. Now he has the freedom to do something else, like start a new label. Now if it never materializes, that's his fault." Scott: (sigh) "Oh, I get it. Say, that Pat Quigley is quite a guy isn't he? Who cares if he doesn't even know who Patsy Cline was! I don't think his ignorance makes either Capitol or EMI look foolish, do you?" Garth: "Not a bit, as long as MY music sells, what else matters? Pupp-, er, I mean Pat even named his kid after me. Hey, do you think I could charge royalties on that?" Scott: "I'm sure if it was possible, you would be doing it." Garth: "What?" Scott: "Er, I said 'I sure need some coffee pal, I wish someone was brewing it.' OK, Garth, help me on this one. People compare you to Pearl Jam in terms of your influence. Pearl Jam is famous for their emphasis on the music, and not commercialization. In addition, they make sure their music is released on vinyl as well". Garth: "Scott, I majored in Advertising!
Commercialization is the name of the game! Don't you see? Look
at McDonald's and K-Mart! Think how much *PRODUCT* they sell!
I'm trying to be just like them! I follow their example for both
my mediocrity, and my low prices for concerts and box sets, but I make it
up in volume! I can't be bothered by vinyl. I'm trying
to push everyone into yet a new format, so that I can resell all the
same stuff again! See this big flashing digital readout in my living
room? That's just like McDonald's too! It's directly connected
to SoundScan, and every time I sell more, it advances! I love
the suckers that buy the box sets, they make it advance by SIX!! I
just can't wait until it says 100 million!!" Garth: "Well...umm...then....everyone can kiss my ass!" Scott: "Oh....in fact I think I hear someone coming now....."
