A hike can be as long or as short as you want. However, there are some things that you need to think about before you set off. Some of these things may be obvious but it is often the obvious that gets overlooked. Make sure that you wear strong footwear Wear several layers of thin clothing instead of one thick layer. Thin layers trap air and keep you warmer than one thick layer. In cold weather, wear gloves and a hat that covers your ears. Don't forget your waterproofs. None of your clothes will keep you warm if they get wet. Choose a Hike Leader who has experience of walking and navigating. Make sure that she is firm enough to make decisions yet flexible enough to realise that there are others in the group. Make sure that you have a good breakfast before you set off. If you are walking all day, take food that is rich in carbohydrates such as biscuits, chocolate, nuts and raisins. In hot weather, you will need lots of liquid so you don't become dehydrated. Drink little and often. Don't wear jeans when you are out walking. Not only are they too tight to be comfortable, but they retain very little heat when they get wet. Between the group, carry a torch; spare batteries; whistle; map; compass; first aid kit. Before you set off, remember to tell someone where you are going and what time you hope to get back.
