Buying an RV
Organise a U.S.Postal address, it will make purchasing an RV and insurance a lot easier (we used our family's).
There is no M.O.T. or road tax in the U.S. but you do have to pay tag fees on your license plate and this needs renewing on your birthday.
Don't underestimate the need for a good generator if you intend boon docking (camping wild).
Low mileage isn't necessarily a good thing in r.v.'s. Depending on the age, this could indicate that the rv has been standing for a long time. An older van should be checked for the following problems, dry rot (cracks) in tyres; rust in petrol tank due to condensation (check via fuel filter); perishing rubber; general build up of crud (brake lines, radiator).
Test drive a few r.v.'s before making your choice. It shouldn't pull to the left or the right and don't let them tell you it's the camber.
RV's are very common in the U.S. and there are plenty to choose from no matter which State you're in, it's a buyers market so take your time and barter.
We bought our RV with a 3 year warranty but found it to be next to useless so cashed it in.
Insurance
You will need an International Driving License, valid for 1 year and available from the RAC.
They will need a record of your insurance history
Get the fullest cover and include Roadside Assistance, as individual tows can be as much as $500 each.
Shop around for insurance as prices and cover can vary widely.
