Kalbarri Day 4
Page 2
Now, before I tell you the rest of the day, I forgot to include our very good friend, Mr Pelican, viewed on the side.

We went for a walk today and took the camera and found Mr Pelican preening himself and posing as a tourist attraction always does.  So, of course, we had to oblige.
After spending the afternoon at Rainbow Jungle, we headed off for our river cruise up the Murchison River.

We left (can't say 'weighed anchor', 'cause we were pulled up on the sand - no anchor!) the jetty at 4pm and set off up the river to see what was around.  There were drinks on board and I told Stu before we got on that I prob'ly wouldn't have anything to drink.  Well, that was "famous last words"!  We partook of the local vintages that they had on board and very nice they were, too.
These photos speak for themselves, but there is some information we found out.  In March 2006, Kalbarri had a lot of water come down the Murchison River.  The photos on this page are an indication of the distance we were able to travel upriver.  This trip has been greatly reduced because of the sandbars that were deposited by the water coming down the Murchison gorges.
Not only has the river got new sandbars further up the river, but, the sandbar that used to run from Chinaman's Beach has gone and in its place is a 25 foot deep hole.  Stui and I went swimming there and it does drop off quite dramatically.  Great for the swimming enthusiast, but the townsfolk and regular tourists miss the bar.
Unfortunately, we didn't get any photos of the wild goats and the kangaroos that came to drink at water holes on the Murchison Station side of the river.  They were very quick and quite small.  The punch up we saw between two juvenile kangaroos was quick but painless and I wish we had got the camera out, but we didn't have time.  But the sunset was nice.
