AJ Burnett: Why a Hot Topic?
                                                                                                     By: Joey D
As the trade deadline looms, the hottest pitcher on the market is Florida Marlins right-handed flamethrower, AJ Burnett.  Teams rumored in acquiring the services of Burnett include the Chicago White Sox, the Baltimore Orioles and the San Diego Padres.  Supposedly other teams are interested in Burnett but remain quiet in rumors.  But why the sudden interest for Burnett who is only 1 years off of Tommy John Surgery?
In 2002, AJ Burnett had his break out year, which still remains a career best.  It was the only season he pitched more than 200 innings (with 204.1 IP) and a sparkling career best 3.30 ERA and had 203 strikeouts.  Other highlights of the year included 7 complete games and 5 shutouts that included a no-hitter with a 12-9 record.  In 2003, Burnett had problems and it was decided after his 4th start that he should get Tommy John Surgery (ligament replacement surgery).  In 2004, Burnett was on the road to recovery but his velocity on his fastball was lower, as expected after surgery.  Now in 2005, Burnett currently has a 3.48 ERA, with a 7-6 record and 132 innings pitched as of 7-25-05.  Also Burnett has 3 complete games with 1 shutout and 124 strikeouts.  2005 is slowly shaping up to be reminiscent of 2002.
But why the sudden interest in a pitcher who has an exact .500 record at 44-44?  With so many teams in contention for a playoff spot in late July it appears that the starting pitching market is over-saturated.  All of the (supposed) available players are closers such as Philadelphia?s Billy Wagner, Tampa Bay?s Denny Baez and Pittsburgh's Jose Mesa.  The only other starting pitcher mentioned in any type of trade talk is Baltimore?s Sidney Ponson.  Burnett may not be Roger Clemens but he has experience, is still young and can go deep into ballgames.  Plus with a fastball that regularly tops 100 miles per hour and potential still through the roof, Burnett who becomes a free agent after season's end is a great 3-month rental for a team like the San Diego Padres who need another pitcher to compliment Jake Peavy in a possible playoff run.  Who will win the AJ Burnett Sweepstakes?  Keep an eye out in the coming days for further developments.
