Removable Rear Apron, 1967 std Beetle.
Page updated November 6th, 2000

I took some pictures of my rear apron project, the whole conversion is not yet completed, but I'm almost done now. The last thing to do is to prepare the apron itself.

Click on the thumbnails to see the larger version. Pictures taken before and after I coated the painted surface with undercoating. Engine bay will get some sound deadening m,aterial attached to it, thsi is the "naked" version. The engine in the picture is an oild 6V 1300. I just put it there to be able to get the seal rails to fit right.

The "arches" on the sides of the engine bay are made of approximately 1" x 1" square steel tubing, there's two of those per side, one you can see arching from top to bottom, and one straight tube below it that ends at the bumper bracket. You can actually stand and jumpo on the bumper bracket without problems, should be strong enough. The firewall part where the "tube frame" is attached to, is reinfoirced by welding a long "L" -shaped stainless steel profile on it, about 1.5-2mm thick. Otherwise the firewall would be too soft to hold the weight. (Bumper plus me on it).

More pictures will follow when I have time to finish the conversion. Please note that after this conversion, you STILL cannot fit the engine in there if you have dual carbs installed, those have to come out first. My other conversion will be more "race" oriented, the entire rear of the car will be a bolt-on piece, leaving nothing but air around the engine bay. No bumpers are used, although a bracket for those could be used if necessary. I will take pictures of that mod later.
