Here you can see some pictures of my convertible project. This car started it's life as a standard 1300 Beetle sedan, but the PO wanted to make it a convertible.. so he cut the roof off and welded in all the required reinforcements. And then lost interest in the project. Ok, on to the pictures. Click on the thumbnails to see the larger version. |

I bought the car mainly because it had disc brakes in the front, I wanted those for my other beetle (1967, light green). But this car turned out to be "interesting" to say the least, although it was in pretty sad shape. It had been sitting outside for a couple of years, under a tarp. It had some major rust problems in the pans, I spent quite a bit of time replacing heater channels and floor pans and other soft spots.
I was almost ready to give up at some point too... picture It was fun though, seeing some progress for a change. I had had the car for a few years before I started doing anything to it. I've been working on it practically all winter of 1999-2000, and now it is getting close to being ready for inspection. I'm excited! The next set was taken the day before the first inspection attempt, September 7th 2000. The vert did not pass inspection the first time, something still wrong with brakes, and one bad balljoint. Plus some minor stuff like door glasses still missing etc. |

| ...So I fixed the damn thing. Replaced both front brake rotors with new, fitted new pads, replaced the rear drum (it was oval shaped), and found a nasty axle o-ring seal leak. Had to take spare parts from my 67, so she's now immobilized until I get to buy new seals. Anyway, I also replaced the doors with a pair I was going to use anyway. The lower hinge was WELDED to the body on the driver's side, so I had to get the hinge pin out in order to get the old door out. Tools: BIG hammer, a steel punch and a small propane/butane torch. Plus at the end, I got frustrated and took a shortcut with an angle grinder, I cut the damn door off. Do not try this at home. Some other minor repairs, and it was time to drive to the inspection station again. This time they found nothing wroing, and I finally got my plates!!! It was so ugly, that the guys asked me if they couyld take pictures of it. I said hell yea, take as many as you want. After I returned to the garage, I quickly hacksawed the door window frames off and welded the remaining holes shut. Then I painted the whole car matt black (spray cans), that's how it will stay for a while now. |

The REDNECK sticker was a christmas present from *the* Volkswagen Goddess, Florida, USA (Thank you!) The roll cage will be painted same bright orange as the helmet you see in the pictures above. I just had the paint mixed for me today (Oct.6.) |
