This image of a skimmer isn't the best but you get the Idea all the parts to build this skimmer can be found in your Home and Garden store (Revy in Canada or Eagle in the States) The skimmer is powered by a pump forcing water into the top and out the bottom.you may have to adjust the height of your skimmer to your tank to prevent any over flows but still allow to the full height of the skimmers' reaction chamber to remove the waste produced by the tank. The air supply located at the far left of the screen is just a standard air pump for aquariums. The air tubbing is threaded into the top of the removable collection cup and attached to the wood air block. By the way the Air blocks which you buy in the pet store is made of Lime Wood . Call around to you locale lumber yards if you can find some you will find the a cheaper alterative to buy little block and you can custom cut them for your needs! The valve is use to allow you to remove the skimmer from the tank without making a mess , this way you can easily clean the inside of the skimmer to maintane it's functioning.

Just a quick note if you are trying to culture rock and have a skimmer on you may run into difficulties as you will be skimming out the coraline alge spores and other micro life! 1
