Old Age Homes: 03 August 2005

A good sign is improved health and improved physical capability. People at the age of 70 also are active. Indian Government has extended retirement age from government service to 60 from 58. This is adequate to prove above statements. Whatever may be reasons but todays older people are capable of doing some work at higher age. Their physical capability cannot match youngsters but they do can deliver something constructive. There may be many reasons for older people needing a place away from their children. Therefore, a home is a need for them. There are such homes in many places but these homes do not take advantage of their capabilities. Mostly these are places where old people can stay have food and medical attention and may be some entertainment. This needs a change.

These old people now respectfully addressed as Senior Citizens, are from all layers of the society. Mostly it is seen that those who were working for others (working on monthly pay) face the problem of their stay in old age. Those who own their own business may retire only after their death. These senior citizens can be of help for 5-10-15 years or even 20-25 years after their retirement. A full time (6 t0 8 hours) work cannot be expected from them, they may not be able to travel a long distance, they may not be able to sustain high physical strain. With all these handicaps still they can remain active using their experience and partially overcome over their limitations. Whatever they do it shall be valuable.

Adult education, Baby sitting, acceptance of home delivery items, minor repairs, consultancy and similar type of constructive activities can be expected from them. In fact no cheaper service can be expected from others in most of these cases. Where husband and wife both work who can accept home delivery during day? Those senior citizens retired from the government service can give the best advise about work related to that office. Most of the senior citizens are retired persons from some service and hence, they shall be extremely useful.

In view of above senior citizens must have shelter very near or the same complex where these services are needed. Town planners should peruse this and propose required changes in town planning to accommodated senior citizens in small groups with regular residential complex. In villages and small towns very single or double story houses are constructed, some plots may be reserved for senior citizens. Builders and developers should construct 2 or 3/ story houses and give on rent stilt floor for on rent to senior citizens. Such allotment can be vacated only on death of the allotee. On vacation these may be only rented to senior citizens. Medical practitioners should give free home service to those residents (No visit fee. Other fees may be charged). Other services also should be prompt and cheaper for senior citizens. The government should make rules for all these. Gram Panchayat, Municipality, Municipal Corporation, builders, doctors, service providers all should have a fixed norms approved by the government In cities where there are multi-story or high rise buildings stilt floor may be reserved for senior citizens.

In return senior citizens should make the Government as their successor for their movable property.
