| An Experience of working with People Sambhav Social Service Organisation is a Non Governmental Organisation working in the field of rural development since 1987 among the Sahariya Tribal communities and some slum communities in Gwalior, Morena, Sheopur and Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh. Program focus – Issue based advocacy, women empowerment children education, Mother And child halt care programmes, Campaign for Child Rights, Slum development, CBR, Campaign for Food Rights. Working with – Sahariya Tribals, Dalits and OBC, Women and Children and slum population in Gwalior. Problems of the Area : Sahariya Adivasis scattered in four districts, estimated population of more than 3 lacs, classified as one of the most primitive ethnic group, living in total deprivation and under the control of other castes. Land alienation, bonded labour, perpetual food shortage, exploited by all, high prevalene of TB, literacy as low as 11% in men and 3% women, migration in search of work, high indebtedness leading to subjugation. The region is characterized by rigid class and caste divisions, with very little intra group mobility and relationships. Very weak presence of NGOs in region. Chronic problem of Decoits and gangsters causing violence, terror rampage to rural population, Frequent abduction, confrontation with police are commonplace incidence. The status of women very low. The stigma of dowry and violence against women continues to be a issue of serious concern. Early marriages, purdha system, sale of women, increasing incidence of sexual harassment of women are some other problems of this region. Panchayati Raj and Nagar Nigam system has yet to acquire their desired role and importance in the eyes of common people. Uptake of government welfare program among the marginalized sections of people is far from satisfactory. No formal and organized efforts have been made to organize NGOs in the discussions and implementations of the Development and IEC activities at district & division levels by the Govt. Sambhav’s Vision and Mission statement Sambhav expresses its vision and mission statement in the following words. Vision - The World is but one country and mankind its citizen Mission : “Striving for sustainable development processes and improvement in quality of deprived people through their organization and capacity building” Sambhav believes that the basic premise within which the weaker sections are expected to gain an honourable position in the society are - * Elimination of traditional disabilities suffered by different sections of population on various counts : * Elimination of exploitation in all forms particularly the overt ones: * Equity for and protection of those engaged in the traditional sectors of economy including those in agriculture, village and house hold crafts and traditional services. * Full development of the potential of every citizen through necessary provision for the nurture of children and their education. * Equality of opportunity to all citizen in all walks of life subject to positive discrimination in favour of the disadvantaged. Aims and objectives of Sambhav : * To initiate the awakening process * To build up the people’s organisation * To build the capacities of the people * To work with the poor and oppressed and not for them * To encourage development of a democratic process towards people’s solidarity * To strengthen women in the expression of their full potential and rightful place in the society * To try integrated and sustainable models of community health and rural development using, people’s participatory approaches * To strengthen community voices through advocacy efforts. Area of Work : In about 200 village of Gwalior, Shivpuri and Sheopur primarily among Sahariya Adivasis, women and dalits, children and disabled. Sambhav identifies community mobilisation, raising income, education, primary health care, supporting community based rehabilitation of disabled persons, conservation of natural resources and advocacy for civil and legal rights as essential program areas to fight poverty in the project areas. |
