I was born in 1978, and this means that I was a teenager
in the early 90s. I obviously spent tons of time playing PC games, and many
of them really left me nothing at all. Some of them, though,
have settled in my heart and will never leave or be replaced, and I don't
care if many new products have increased audio and video performance, show
smooth 3D action or a better plot.
Here they are... my Top List:
Monkey Island (I, II, III and IV)
Civilization (I, II and III)
d Hats off, people... This is one of the most complete,
graphically stunning, addictive games I have ever played or heard of. And
it has an intelligent and original plot too. Set in a parallel world, "The
False Prophet" is the sixth chapter of the saga of Ultima (which is now
at chapter IX, not considering Ultima Online, which counts many thousands players all over the Net). You are the Avatar, Champion
of Lord British, ruler of Britannia. The Shrines of Eight Virtues, pillars
of the world, have been attacked by Gargoyles, and are now under their control.
It is imperative that you free them as soon as possible, to restore the power
of Virtues. But why did Gargoyles attack? What's their goal? Is the war between
Britannia and the Underworld inevitable? No locations in this game: an entire
world is yours to travel and explore, together with up to 7 other comrades
you can completely control. Hundreds of citizens, fighters and mages you can
talk to, in many dozens places of interest. The magic and combat system is
just great, allowing you and your men to gain experience and raise over normal
men to reach a terrific power, necessary to match demons and dragons and to
uncover the dark danger threatening the peaceful people of this immense world.
Ultima VI was never released in italian, so I played it in english... and
I can tell you that I learnt more about english playing this game than at
school. Not a bad thing for a 14 years old guy.
- Another great piece of PC games history... I can't
really tell how many MK II matches I have played in my life. MK II is a funny
way to spend an evening with a friend. Second of the four-chapter Mortal Kombat
serie, MK II is in my opinion the best one. Good graphics, good playability and
12 balanced characters to choose: all you need in a good beat'em up. My
personal favourites are Sub-Zero and Johnny Cage (who is the mightiest of all
MK II warriors, in my opinion). My arch-enemy is Scorpion, the yellow ghost
ninja who turns into a f***ing killing machine when controlled by a friend of
mine who loves MK II just as much as I do.
Monkey
Island (I, II, III and IV)
dfTwo thumbs up! This
is the greatest adventure game I have played in my life, and probably the
best adventure game serie ever. The main character is Guybrush Threepwood
(young, poor, clumsy hero and pirate wannabe) who fights against the evil
ghost of Captain LeChuck, terror of the Caribbean. Each Monkey Island game
is a masterpiece of humor... they have a particular taste for absurd, funny
situations and every game is pure entertainment. Beyond the fun you can still
find a product as solid as a rock: Monkey Island adventures are challenging,
with tons of puzzles and problems to solve. If you want relax and fun, this
is the title for you. "The Legend of Monkey Island" (Chapter one)
and "Monkey Island - LeChuck's Revenge" (Chapter two) are my personal
favourites, but the whole serie is definitely worth it.
sdThis game is the
first Formula One simulator ever produced. There were many driving games
before, but no simulators. Formula One Grand Prix represents a real
breakthrough: the arcade racing action is parallel to the setting up of the
best car possible for each circuit. Training, patient work and a true attention
to detail are the real fun. Qualifying races and warm-ups are an important part
of the game if you want to beat your best opponents, while concentration and
precision are musts if you'll ever want to win a race, or just complete one. This
is the first game of a great serie, that produced GP2, GP3 and GP4 as well
(each of them with terrific graphics and playability, considering the
respective releasing years), and a true masterpiece.
fdjAbsolutely the best
strategy game, unprecedented, and it will be a long time before you will see
such a unique and fun strategy game again. Civilization I is a true turning
point in the computer games universe. Its concept and look have been copied
by many after its incredible success, but only its true heirs "Civilization
II" and "Civilization III" fully inherited its greatness. Control
and develop your civilization, making war and peace to protect your territories
and to expand over your neighbours' lands. Lead your people through the ages,
from the wheel to tactical nukes, in a constant battle for supremacy. Diplomacy,
tactics and planning are what you need to let your civilization grow and prosper,
and to stand the quest of time. Great game, great concept, great AI, great
everything. Just WOW.
