Herbs
have been used by mankind as medicines for thousands of years. Plants were
here long before we stood erect or even insects came into being.
We
can actually say that nature opened the first drugstore. Primitive man and
animals depended on preventive use of plants and herbs to avoid disease and
to maintain health and vitality.
Folk
medicine (herbs) reaches very far back in time. The practice of herbal
medicine dates back to the very earliest periods of Chinese history. The
oldest is the Pen Ts’ao Ching around 2650BC, in which the Red Emperor,
Shen-ung described various medicaments and included instruction for their
use. |

In
Indonesia, the use of herbs dates back as early as the Majapahit era
around the year 800 as evidenced by the stone carving picturing herbs
preparation ritual at Borobudur temple. In native Indonesian language,
herbs formulation consumed for general health purposes is termed “JAMU”. |

|
In
ancient Java, many respected formulations of “JAMU” were written on Lontar
leaves. Later on (around 1912), a Dutch lady J. Kloppenburg – Versteegh had
documented the data and information on the use of native Indonesian plants
for curing illnesses. Some years later, Heine and Cabe Puyang did the same
thing. Nowadays, their contributions are becoming part of the history in
Indonesian herbal.

Traditionally jamu's form is liquid, then the form is improving to
powder, capsule, tablet and extract. |

Unlike many pharmaceutical companies that seek to isolate a
substance from a plant or herb, create a synthetic version of it, patent
this substance, and then sell it at high cost through prescription
medications, which often produce side effects, “JAMU” follows the premise
that nature has provided us with a gift of healing medicines. With proper
care and understanding these medicines can assist us in healing ourselves.
There are certainly fewer side effects in using these natural medicines, and
often there are improvements in the quality of life (enhancements in mood,
appetite, energy, complexion, and so on).
