Sound in Multimedia

What is Multimedia? This is a learning environment which allows users to take advantage of all their senses through various media presentation including sound, text, animation and video. The perceived advantage of multimedia is it can allow a person to learn a lot more information in a shorter period of time. There has been limited research into the possible uses of sound in the multimedia presentation of learning on the head-mounted display component of a wearable computer.Sound could possibly be used to aid users to switch their attention between the stages of the execution of a procedural task whilst receiving instructions via a head-mounted display.
Until comparatively recently the audio channel of computer based instruction has been underused due to limitations in audio technology in computers. This has led designers to underrate the potential of sound for enhancing instruction in multimedia courseware. There are limited guidelines for the use of the audio channel in multimedia. There is a need to investigate whether voiceovers and non-verbal cues embedded in multimedia courseware improves learning.
