WITH RENEWED VIGOR AND ZEAL...

~~ A Triple Celebration ~~

“With renewed vigor and zeal” they marched to the altar of the Lord to thank and to re-commit themselves to the mission   the New Priests, the Jubilarians and the candidates for  Final Profession  to celebrate a Eucharist marked with a triple celebration in the packed to the doors Institute Chapel at XLRI on May 24, 2009 at 6 pm. Provincial, Mike T. Raj, presided over the Eucharist accompanied by the Provincial’s Delegate to Orissa,  Gyan Kujur, the new Priests: Amrit Kujur, Gulshan Kujur,  Jaison Joshua,  Romanus Tete, Somy Mathew, the Jubilarians:  Eric Cassel (50 years in the Society),  John J Deeney (70 years in the Society), Michael Tirkey (25 years in the Priesthood),  Thomas Nelliakunnel (25 years in the Priesthood), and the ones to make their  Final Profession:  George P Joseph and  Joseph Surin.  C.L. George, the Superior of the Jesuit Community of XL, extended a cordial welcome to one and all.

A brief thumbnail sketch  of each of the New Priests, the Jubilarians and the candidates for Final Profession was given by Bipin Kujur, Vinod Fernandes and Vincent Bhengra respectively affirming in each one of them our Jesuit Identity: “many sparks, one fire; many stories, one history”!

As part of the homily, the Golden Jubilarian in the Society,   Eric Cassel, the first ever local vocation from Jamshedpur, with his wit and humour, shared his life in the Society unfolding the inspiration he drew from the Jesuit stalwarts of Jamshedpur. Gyan read out a letter of congratulation and appreciation from General Adolfo Nicolas. This was followed by Gulshan Kujur, sharing his call to Jesuit life from very humble beginnings. Provincial, Mike T. Raj, summed up with his reflections on a call to “Ite Inflemmate Omnia”.

Along with the large number of Jesuits (including Novices and Scholastics attending the Summer Programme), Diocesan Clergy and the family members of George P Joseph and Joseph Surin, the occasion was witnessed and graced by Bp. Felix Toppo, S.J., Bishop of Jamshedpur.

In his vote of thanks Tom Nelliakunnel, lauded the aspects of support and encouragement of Superiors, Formators and companions in the life of a Jesuit. He expressed his gratitude to the Jesuit community of XLRI for providing such an exquisite ambience and for making arrangements for a sumptuous meal. He thanked all the scholastics for the beautiful liturgy helped by a choir that provided an opportunity for the entire congregation to sing along, meticulously planned and executed under the leadership of PCF, Jerry Cutinha.

The melodious singing of Emile and Abe hit the right note as Eric Cassel cut the cake in the company of New Priests, Jubilarians and the Finally Professed in the softly and decoratively lit lawns of XL. The cool weather that followed the noon showers and the aroma of a sumptuous meal contributed much for all to “sentire gustare” the triple celebration in all aspects!

SCHOLASTICS SUMMER PROGRAMME

(SSP 2009)

It was rather a 'hot' welcome, as Peter Martin put it, when Scholastics landed up in TRTC on May 8, from different parts of the country, for the unfolding of the 'SSP 2009' package bundled into several programmes in a series  beginning with the Youth Orientation Programme. Thanks to the PCF, Jerry Cutinha's strict measures, it was indeed a  'home coming' for a few Scholastics who had been missing the Summer Programmes for the past two to three years due to various reasons!

“Try to learn from the youth, not teach them”, Sunny Jacob instructed the twenty plus Scholastics gathered at TRTC for the two day preparation for the Youth Orientation Programmes in different parts of the Kolhan region.  Along with a few sessions on how to conduct the Youth Camps, Sunny also gave the Scholastics some resource material in the form of PowerPoint Presentations and small video clippings.  “Coconutta water, good for your daughter…”, Emile Coelho, veteran party singer of the Province, taught the Scholastics 'n' number of party songs to attract the youth. Jerry Cutinha added a few tips from his experience of conducting retreats and camps for the youth.

After the two days of intense preparation, the Scholastics were sent out for a week to the following schools and parishes for the orientation programmes for three days at every place: St. Xavier's School, Lupungutu, St. Xavier's Girls School, St. Xavier's Boys School, Chaibasa,  Carmel School, CKP, St. John's School, Tepasai, St. Ignatius School, Rengra, St. Teresa's School, Jhinkpani, St. Paul Miki Parish, Bordor, St. Xavier's Parish, Chaibasa, Queen of Peace Parish and Basahatu, St. Teresa's Parish, Jhinkpani. The whole programme was arranged and co-ordinated by Peter Martin, Province Coordinator for Youth Commission, with the help of Tony John and Jerome Kerketta.

The evaluation indicated that indeed it was a great experience for the Scholastics.  The schools seem to have invited them again next year to have week-long programmes. Some Scholastics, at the request of the Principals/Superiors, conducted sessions for the school staff as well as neighbourhood children! Chak De! Schols! You have touched the tender hearts of many!

The actual Summer Programme, which Scholastics look forward to, began with the 'Villa' at XLRI on May 18.  Jerome Kerketta, the Coordinator of 'SSP 2009', along with Renny Abraham, Asst. Coordinator, and with the help of various committees set by them, took pains to plan and execute every programme in it's minutest detail. C.L. George, the Superior of XLRI Community, welcomed the Scholastics with a ‘high mea’l and 'soft drinks' 'to beat the heat'! The 'Fun Funda' exploded with games and entertainment scheduled for the next two days. In spite of all the vigorous games, some Scholastics gained weight - thanks to the good food served  by the catering team!

The next four days were spent in serious reflections and discussions.  S. Tony spent half a day on May 21 unfolding the mystery of Kandhamal riots with a lot of PowerPoint Presentations and video clippings. This was followed by a session on 'Hindutva' prepared and presented by the VJ Scholastics.  The sessions ended with a video on the riots, “Will Rajini Return”, compiled by the VJ Scholastics.

On May 22, Joe Puli 'aligned' the scholastics to the Province Mission with his sessions on “Crafting the Call”.  Joe Njara journeyed the Scholastics to the world of Ignatius on May 24.

“We felt the Province has taken us seriously and involved us in building up the Province” said one of the Scholastics after 'a day with the Formation Commission'.  The Scholastics reflected and discussed on several issues and offered several suggestions to the Commission.  It was opined that every year at least one of the commissions should have a day with the Scholastics.  The day ended with a session by the Provincial. In his talk, the Provincial, Mike T. Raj, addressed several issues in the line of GC 35 reflecting the mind of the Superior General.  It began with the photographs of his visit to the US and Rome; and ended with the present scenario of Orissa with regard to 'divide and develop/develop and divide' approach.

The Summer Programme reached its peak with the Mass and dinner of the 'Triple Celebration' of the Jubilarians, the Professed and the New Priests on May 24, which was specially arranged at “one go” to allow the Scholastics to witness these 3-in-1 celebrations while they were still in Jamshedpur!

After the evaluation session on May 25, the thirty six Scholastics present for the villa elected Vally Mendonca and Anil Dang as Coordinator and Asst. Coordinator respectively for the 'SSP 2010'.  Thank you, Jerome and Renny! That was a fabulous 'SSP 2009'!

AMDA

Special thanks go out to Jerry Cutinha for writing up a new project for the leprosy patients of Amda. The donor finally accepted our project. We are grateful to Jerry for sending Justine to help me out in the project. He did a wonderful job. I specially thank him for his hard work and also for looking after the office when I was out. On 1 May Justine's father was admitted in hospital. He immediately paid a visit. It gave him much relief.

I was busy with the new project. I went to Lohardaga to attend the DLO meeting. It was encouraging. We hope the Government staff will cooperate well. Mr. Balram and Theophil will take care of those areas. Now we were asked to look after the IMA in Ranchi. IMA is another office for CSWC.

Visitors: Alex Misquith, came from Dhanbad, on his way to Chaibasa, and Jaya Prakash from Tundi spent a night. DFIT Administrator and Clark visited our project and monitored it. They were happy with the way we were implementing it.

BASAHATU

The month of May brought showers of blessings for us. Now the rocky ground looks green. We are relieved from the scorching heat. Sushil Ekka received news of the sudden death of his younger brother, Kishore Ekka.  At that moment he had gone to Chandmari Hospital (CKP) for his medical check-up. On 4 May he rushed to Mandar for his brother's burial. Our heart felt condolences to Sushil.

All three of us were busy for the post Easter house blessing right through the whole month of May. Two batches of youth camps were held at Patel Bagan in Sundarnagar by the Diocesan Youth Director. Our parish youth also participated in that camp and came back joyful and happy.

During the summer vacation St. Xavier's School hall was occupied by the parish children. Two groups of children came to attend the preparation classes for First Holy Communion and Confirmation.  Sunil Lakra's short and sweet visit to Basahatu was indeed a magic moment for all of us.

- Kishore Lugun

JESU BHAVAN

Jesu Bhavan has been blessed with a lot of visitors these days. Fr. Amritlal Toppo, the out-going Provincial of M.P. came for the visitation of his men here in the last week of April. He was accompanied by the PCF, Fr. Leander Xalxo. The two days they spent brought a lot of blessings to all of us. Their encouraging presence stirred our spirits. Another group of M.P. Jesuits spent a few days with us when Fr. Theodore Toppo, Socius to the Provincial and Fr. Cyril Ekka brought Br. Cyril Kerketta for a check-up to the Cancer hospital. Our Novices took turns to look after Sch. Pascal Dhanwar after his operation. They were so impressed by Pascal's sunny disposition.

Kapil took a few days off to attend the province gathering of M.P. Jesuits. He made use of this opportunity to visit his dear ones at home. Thanks to the timely help of Eric, K.M. Joseph was able to reach home well in time to attend the funeral of his father, Mr. K.M. Mathew. Carl Dincher preached an eight day retreat to the novices of Montfort Brothers at Sitagarha, Hazaribag. Now he is busy preparing for his trip to Australia for preaching a number of retreats there in June and July. Gilbert spent the summer at Jesu Bhavan going through his retreat-notes and course-materials. He also found time to give a helping hand to some of the parishes in the city. Gautam made sure that the statue in the cemetery is painted before he left for Kerala on 16 May to conduct a training programme for the principals of AIACHE. Xavier, with the additional charge as acting Superior, is busy in the house and in the farm. Joe Njara returned after preaching a number of retreats in various part of the country.

Joe Kalathil spent a few hours with the novices sharing his mission experiences in Kargil and in J&K. The novices were impressed and inspired by the pioneering spirit of Joe.

Reminder

First Vows: Our second year novices are pronouncing their First Vows on 21 June 2009 at 05.30 p.m. in Jesu Bhavan, Mango, Jamshedpur.

LOYOLA NIWAS

With the departure of Mike T Raj, John F Guidera and B.Ed.-student-priest, Anselem Dungdung, our community was reduced to a trinity. Small is beautiful!

Alex Mascarenhas teamed up with C L George and Charlie Pereira to conduct a half-a-day-training-program for all Province House Treasurers and those handling accounts on Saturday, 16 April, at XLRI. Such weighty matters as Provident Fund, how to prepare the Annual Budgets for Community and Works and how to fill in the Annual Form 29 and 30 for Rome were taken up. It was agreed that the Treasurer's Forum would meet twice a year and that the Province Treasurer would visit the Units at least once to help them with their books of accounts and other registers that each House has to maintain.

Gus Ezha never stops learning as he spends the morning hours till noon at Court learning how to argue cases, prepare briefs and familiarize himself with legal matters. There are times when his evenings are taken up by individuals and groups seeking his counsel with regard to how to proceed in law suits.

Joe Kalathil, who was in Kashmir for the past three years, returned and has been edifying us by his life of prayer and cordiality. Never known to come empty handed, Joe brought back a few coffee mugs and dried fruits from Kashmir. Perhaps we had more fun in “cracking” walnuts without a nut cracker.

Exit Joshy Kunnel and Tony John, enter Vally Mendonca, to carry forward the work started by Joshy. The Curia is fortunate to have these computer savvy scholastics who have made attempts to up date our entire computer package. Jai Ho, Joshy. Tony  and Vally!

In his short stay at the Curia, Vally was able to apply his Midas touch to nearly every aspect of the office where the computer could be used to greater effect, the cover design for the Triple Celebrations and the Jamshedpur Jesuits mast head are just a few examples.

With the appointment of Jerry Kujur as Province Infirmarian, the responsibility to look after the sick and those recovering from surgery has been lifted from Eric's broad shoulders.

-- Eric Cassel

LOYOLA SCHOOL, BHUBANESWAR

Our ICSE (Std 10) results were above expectations for the third time in a row. Out of 87 appeared 28 scored above 90% and 24 were above 80% category and no failures. The local newspapers too were in praise of our nascent school's achievement as Abhijit Sahoo is the city's topper with 96.58%. The hard work of our teaching staff has certainly paid off!

Robert Sequeira, despite his age, has gone for a month long annual visit to Bangalore and Mangalore to see his old acquaintances, friends and former students.

Junior and Senior Computer rooms have been remodeled and updated. Physics Chemistry and Biology laboratories are being shifted to the newly built Science Block. Pascal is supervising the shifting. The summer heat with 90% humidity is enough to benumb his movements. Our lab assistant spent a few days in Loyola Jamshedpur to learn from the experienced lab staff.

Priest-in-charge, Daya, is preparing the children for their First Holy Communion. Loyola Oriya School had its first official inspection by the 'District Inspector of Education'. Headmaster, Daya, after making several trips to the Education Dept., is optimistic about

the early “recognition”, albeit with several legal lacunae.

We are eagerly waiting for the early monsoons to find some respite from the searing heat. The absolute majority in Orissa Assembly and a strong Central Government should be of immense help for the Church and it's institutions in the Utkal region! Praise the Lord.

-- Pius Fernandes

LOYOLA SCHOOL, JAMSHEDPUR

With the city experiencing searing  heat, the DC of Jamshedpur ordered the closure of all schools from May 4. Therefore, we had to close the school early. The school will now re-open on June 15.

Soon after the closure of the school, the community members - Oscar, Sunil, Sushil, Cyril, and Maxi together took a much needed break and visited the families of the community members. It was a pleasant, relaxing and enriching experience for all of them.

This year, the results for the ICSE and ISC of our school , read as 100% success. Our students have faired excellently. In the ISCE exams, Adarsh Thakur became the State Topper with 98.2% and in the ISC exams, two students from the Commerce and Arts streams respectively were the city toppers. Congratulations to Victor, his deputy Sunil and their committed staff for their hard work in keeping the Loyola flag flying high.

The Principal, Victor, attended a successful Bangalore Chapter of LAA Meet on May 16. It was organized at the Regal Bangalore Club in Bangalore. The Bangalore Chapter of LAA team had also invited Jamshed Billimoria and Khatu Devitre, who were among the first students at Loyola in 1947 and part of the first batch, the Class of 1953.

On May 2, Sunil was given a fond farewell after successfully finishing three years of service at Loyola as Vice-Principal. On May 25, he left for Tertianship in Shembaganur.

Gerald D'Souza, doing his special studies in Trichy, took time out to make his annual retreat at Loyola.

Br. Oscar, Sushil, Eddy, and Jaison joined the Province Retreat at XLRI.

The Loyola community had a few guests in Gregory D'Silva, George Thana, Pius Fernandes, Somy Mathew, Gulshan Kujur, Julian Ekka, Benji and Bene Kichingia.

After Easter, Cyril, our Sonari PP, successfully finished the house blessings ably supported by Jaison Joshua, our new Vice Principal. The devotion to Our Lady has been faithfully observed with the faithful coming together in their respective areas for rosary and prayer. The concluding solemn procession with the Eucharistic celebration is scheduled for May 30. The three year term of the Parish Council came to an end this month. The new Parish Council will be elected in the month of June.

-- Oscar Horo

SANKHABHANGA, BARIPADA

On 24 May evening a devastating cyclonic storm with  rain and strong winds shook the entire region of Baripada. It continued uninterrupted till the next day night bringing life to a stand still. Our electricity vanished for the next three days. Bene Kujur and Sunny rose to the occasion and went to the electricity office several times with the result that by evening we once again began to enjoy  an uninterrupted supply of electricity.

Sunny and Bene went to meet the lawyer to acquaint themselves with the latest position on the land files. Sunny is planning to stream line the school activities for the next academic year while Bene helps him in all possible ways. Tiru is engrossed in the garden collecting fruits and making ready the field for planting fresh vegetables. Sunny and Bene had an appointment with the DDC. It was very cordial. The DDC is a close relative of Bene. Sunny and Bene made several trips to the CI office to do the necessary work for obtaining an NOC for our school. Tiru made a short visit to Jamshedpur for an eye-check up and came back with a referal to the Eye Hospital in Kolkata . The school has  hardly any decent  furniture for teachers and students. That is the immediate concern we have right now. Is there any generous soul or institution  who can help us to help our school?

-- Sunny Jacob

TUNDI

The month of May, with all its heat and light, saw the water level going down dangerously low and the hand pumps running dry after some time. Raphael and Tony had a hard time managing to get the hostellers to have an adequate supply of water to clean and wash, not to mention to drink.. Due to the pressure from the District administration, the school closed earlier on the 9 May and the hostellers, except for the tenthers who stayed back for extra tuition classes till June, left the same day. Jaiprakash left for Mangalore to attend his Sister's Silver Jubilee Profession and other commitments and came to Jamshedpur in time to make his Annual Retreat. Raphael left on the 16th for his home visit followed by his Annual Retreat. Tony Bodra too left on the 16th to attend the Scholastics' Summer Programme followed by his annual retreat and home visit. This being the Marian Month of the rosary as well as the time for Grain Blessing, George handled all the Village Masses and took care of the maintenance work of the Hostel and House as well as taking care of the Hostellers.

Hats off to Sr. Philo and the School Staff. Due to their hard work and students' efforts, we had a cent per cent pass in our Matric Batch. Out of the 31 who wrote, we had 29 First Divisions and 2 Second Divisions out of whom 4 secured Distinction. This is the second consecutive year we are having cent per cent pass. The school also bid farewell to Sr. Sabina, SND who was known for her dynamic and creative nature. We wish her all the best in her future studies. Sr. Prassanna, the Superior, is also getting a change in June. We'll miss her inspirational presence in Tundi.

Our Parish Youth attended the Junior and Senior Diocesan Youth Camp and came back enthused and energetic to work for the betterment of the parish .They were all praise for the organizers of the camp. The last week of May saw around 45 people attending the Faith Formation Camp as well as two couples for the Marriage Preparation Camp. For the first time in the history of Jisu Jaher, we have 10 families receiving Baptism and Confirmation - all together - on the Feast of Pentecost, 31st of May. George had to make a quick trip to Ranchi to get a new Baptism Register for the Parish!

XIMB

P.T. Joseph conducted leadership programme for Sisters working in the Social Apostolate at the beginning of May. It rejuvenated them and gave them a new orientation in their approach to social work. And on 22 of May, he offered a programme on 'Competency Mapping' for Scholastics of our Province, which enabled our young men to identify their strengths and abilities in order to become effective instruments in building up the kingdom of God. From 24 to 26 May, he conducted a similar 'Competency Mapping' for the scholastics of Kolkata Province which was much appreciated by all. Well done, P.T.! The future of the Jesuits in India looks bright with such clear orientation and specific planning to suit each individual Jesuit.

Tony Uvary has completed the renovation of Xavier Residence. He left no stone unturned and has given a fresh face lift to the building. Now he is fully immersed in the completion of the new academic block and a new hostel for the ladies. It is difficult to locate him in one place. Like a wave his presence is felt in many places at the same time.

A cousin brother of Panka expired on the 14 of May. He rushed to attend the funeral service and after that, he participated in the Province Gathering at Bhopal. Blacius, defying heat and unpredictable rain, monitored the social activities in the Eastern Orissa Region.

Gyan Prakash Kujur joined officially the  XIMB community on 28 of May though he had started long back the work as CENDERET Administrator.  Almost all the three areas of CENDERET are visited by him. The staff and professionals are extremely happy to see him in action. Many have expressed that now things will move faster and  better. All the best, Gyan!

The parents and relatives of George Joseph stayed at XIMB for two days and proceeded to XLRI to take part in his Final Profession. They felt right at home

-- George Joseph

XLRI

The community took a well deserved break from its works by having the traditional   quinzaine for two weeks. Tome Jesuit Residence organized the last villa before the Summer Vacation on Thursday April 30 with a BANG! It was well attended and appreciated by all. Jerry Kujur assumed office as the Minister of Tome Jesuit Residence and Infirmarian of the Province Infirmary. He introduced several changes such as providing a tub of ice-cream with three flavors in one container to make it easy for the sick and the old to serve themselves generously whenever they want. Ed McGrath will be delighted to hear this change! With regard to making steady progress in health, Pascal continues to be on fast track.. He has already started walking   with the help of a walker. His cheerfulness and constant smile is a source of inspiration for all the inmates of the infirmary and the members of the community and all the scholastics and fathers who visited him.

The Annual Convocation of the one year General Management Programme was held on the 9 May. About hundred students received Diplomas. Abe, the Vice-Chairman of the Governing Board and Director of the Institute conducted the proceedings and distributed the diplomas.  George and Raj went to Kolkata to buy some special materials for the newly set up Director's lounge and the MDP Residence. During their trip, they visited Ajit in Paramount Nursing Home. They spent time with him to encourage him and pray over him. Raj went to Mumbai to attend the Alumni meeting. More than hundred alumni gathered for this get-together. The admission process of the Institute has been completed. An additional section of PM&IR has been added this year. The latest Survey of B-Schools has ranked XLRI number three out of more than 1500 B-Schools in the country. Congratulations to Abe and his team of dedicated faculty and staff!

Paul has gone to Pune and will be returning on the 31 May. He will also be helping out in the Conference of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools. After that, he will be returning to Pune to take up his next assignment. We wish him all success.   Abe is busy getting things organized for this prestigious conference to be held from June 7-10. James has gone to Dubai to teach a course in financial management and so missed the triple celebrations. Sirinus had doctoral level classes all through the summer months without any break.

XLRI as usual welcomed the scholastics for the Summer Programme and made all its resources available for their study and relaxation. It hosted the Province 3-in-1 Celebrations of the Jubilarins, New Priests and Final Vovents. We had a wonderful Eucharistic celebration arranged by Jerry Cutinha and his team of scholastics followed by a sumptuous fellowship meal. More than 200 people attended this triple celebration. At the beginning of the Mass, George welcomed the congregation, the families and friends of George Joseph and Joe Surin. The whole congregation was moved by the personal sharing by Eric Cassel of his 50 golden years of life in the Society of Jesus, and the ordination and a few months of priestly life by Gulshan Kujur. It was followed by an inspiring homily by the main celebrant Mike T Raj.  After this triple celebration, began the Province Retreat at XLRI directed by Fr. Jose Changanachery from Gujarat Province. About 67 Jesuits are making this retreat.
