Ordination of George Joseph and Tony Uvari

Most Rev Marianus Arockiasamy, the Archbishop of Madurai Diocese ordained George Joseph and Tony Uvari on 29 December 2001, at St Mary's Cathedral, Madurai. On the next day, 30 December, at 9.00 am, George celebrated his first Mass at Rajapalayam and Tony Uvari offered his first Mass at 6.00 pm at Sindalaichery. Frs Panneerselvam, Mike T Raj, Joseph Surin, Br Benedict and Schs Josy Xavier, Santosh, Rajesh, Manoj, Alwyn participated both in the Ordination and first Masses. At Sindalaichery, after the first Mass of Tony Uvari, Jamshedpur men came together for the Province gathering along with Mr Savarimuthu and Mr Johnson who were members of our Province. Indeed it was a happy occasion where we could partake in the happiness of the people of two cities and one Province.

- A Panneerselvam

Reconstruction of Jharkhand

ISI-Delhi, XISS-Ranchi and Bagaicha-Ranchi organised a seminar at XISS for three days on the theme "Reconstruction of Jharkhand" from 22 to 24 February 2002. Fr Stan was one of the main organisers. Great speakers like Dr Ramdayal Munda, Dr Sanjay Basu Mallik, Dr B P Keseri, Mr Meghnath, Dr P P Hembrom, Ms Vasavi, Mr Faisal Anura, Mr Bamdi Uraon and others enlightened the audience on various issues.

Topics like self-rule, industrial policy, education, health, women's development and dangers of fundamentalism were discussed. The anti people elements in the recent Panchayat Raj Act and the proposed bill on Industrial Policy were vehemently opposed.

From our Province, Fr Mike Tirkey, Fr Jerry Cutinha, Fr Cyrinus Topno, Sch Tony P M and Fr Mike T Raj participated in the seminar.

News from Houses

Amda & Basahatu

The funding agency (Damien Foundation India Trust) and the local administration are very happy and impressed with our work: planning, coordination and the result. Seeing the efficient and effective work, they have asked us to take up the whole district of Seraikela-Kharswan for the eradication of leprosy. Since there are NGOs like BSS, R K Mission, NJMS, etc already working in different blocks of this district, our role will be to help them in planning, coordination and integration of leprosy activity with general health service.

This year Damien Foundation has agreed to construct four Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in four blocks - Kuchai, Tonto, Jaganathpur and Manjari. The responsibility of construction and supervision of these buildings is also given to us. We have already started the work and we hope to complete the construction by July 2002.

The Parish team (Fr Paul, Fr Tony, Sisters and Catechists) after completing the census of the Parish is busy giving retreats to the parishioners in 18 villages in preparation for Easter. Fr Michael Tirkey with enthusiasm and vigour is going out every day to different villages organising meetings and helping the people to form "Gram Sabhas".

Basahatu has a WLL phone (06582) 86186. The local code is 921.

Clive's House

The visitation of the Provincial and the PCF was a time of grace for us. Their patient listening and guidance strengthened our resolve to form ourselves in better ways.

Fr Provincial was here on 10 January and he stressed on learning for life. In the first week of February, the PCF visited us. In the same week Fr Dincher also paid us a surprise visit.

The Provincial of Madurai met the Community on 14 February and joined us for the Eucharist.

On 14 January we celebrated Pongal as a Community. All of us enjoyed eating 'pongal' and 'karumbu' (sugarcane). Games and video shows were held to enhance the joy of the day.

The Community day celebrations will be during the second week of March. Already through games we are getting into the mood.

- Vinod & Sunil

DNS

He came, he saw, he was conquered by the few people who are still here, and remember him, from yester years. It was a great joy to have Dick Lane-Smith with us. Fr Provincial took time out from his busy schedule and brought Dick to DNS.

Joe Anthony hoisted tricolour on Republic Day at the Hindi School. Romanus Tete regaled the students with a short but much appreciated cultural programme on the occasion. In the month of January, there was a series of picnics, classwise, on the School ground. The mega event of the month was the grand and popular Fete, Joe and Romanus organised in aid of the Hindi School Teachers' Welfare Fund: a grand success. Romanus dashed home to be with his mother who was seriously sick. She is better now.

Panneer lead the DNS workers for a picnic to Maithon. He is most busy carrying out major repairs on the Science Block. He has many irons in the fire. Yet manages to keep his cool.

Having put up KG admission lists, the indomitable Saleth then went underground. He surfaced in Dhanbad, visiting homes of students and making merry.

George Joseph returned to base after his ordination and began his Guided Pastoral Ministry under the watchful eye of K C Anthony. George's priest-cousin from the Archdiocese of Madurai came on a visit to Dhanbad.

Away from the biting winter cold of Jharkhand, Woolsie headed south and basked in balmy sunshine while making the visitation of our Scholastics.

Recent visitors to DNS were Pius Fernandes for ICSE inspection in Bokaro; Tony Uvari and Kosga Yagapparaj on a fraternal visit to George Joseph.

Stop Press: Manish Kumar, a Std II child of the Hindi School, died soon after a truck loaded with coal ran over him today morning, 21 February.

- Emile Coelho

Gande Dungri

This year we had a grand Republic Day celebration. Captain Dhanunjay Misra, head of the sports in TISCO, was the Chief Guest. He was very much impressed by the march past and the band. He had a word of appreciation for the School and the students and promised to help us in the field of sports.

The month of February passed without having any major event. All are busy with their studies for the final examination. The first batch of students from our School is writing the Board Exam this year. We wish them all the best that they may come out with flying colours.

- Thomas C G

Jatni

A former Rector of Padanpur Seminary Woolsie made a flying visit to St Paul's with our POI Lisbert who was accompanied by Jerry and Amaladoss, on their way from Khondamal to Bhubaneswar. Lisbert graciously exchanged news and views on problems and perspective of early seminary formation all over India. Woolsie had been here during 1990-94 and the timid Std X boy whom Woolsie had taken into the Seminary in 1990, is now the formidable Fr Minister of the Seminary.

Seminary Day was celebrated on the Feast of St Paul's Conversion. In the morning, the Archbishop was met at the entrance gate and received with traditional adivasi welcome dance and singing and led to the stage, where we had the concelebration. After the lunch with the invitees, we had the entertainment from 2.00 to 5.00 pm. There were reports and speeches galore, Oriya and English skits and a wide spectrum of dances, classical and modern. One of the much appreciated break-dance by our Seminarians was called "New Evangelization"! All our neighbouring villagers were welcome and they thoroughly enjoyed the whole show.

Provincial Charlie's visitation was a source of grace for all concerned.

- Lawrence Gnanarethinam

Jilling

Fr Provincial and Fr Richard Lane-Smith came to our Community on 8 February. They brought Br Paul along with them. The Community gave Br Paul a warm welcome on the same day. He celebrated his 37th birthday on 14 February in a very simple way.

The annual sports day of our School was held on 16 February. On the eve of the day, the Headmaster and the staff did a marvelous job in preparing the boys and the girls for the final show. The BDO of Barabazar, Mr Indranil Mukerjee, a former student of St Xavier's College, Calcutta, was the Chief Guest. He was greatly impressed by the parade. In his short speech he mentioned that the physical and intellectual growth of students is indispensable and therefore, they must participate in sports and develop their skills and abilities. Br Paul and Sch Sylverius contributed their artistic skills to the success of the function.

The Loyola Academy boys and girls along with the staff went to Kuilapal for the annual picnic on 18 February. Mr Samim, the father of one of our students, lent us his deluxe bus at a very cheap rate. All of us enjoyed the picnic thoroughly.

At present, admission forms are being sold in the School. There are interviews for children on 3 March. The number seems to be increasing day by day.

- Sylverius Lugun

LCE

After the completion of the practice teaching sessions in various Schools in the town, the students are back in their classes from 11 February. All of them found the teaching experience very enriching. On 10 February, about 95 students of the Bachelor of Education programme of IGNOU gathered in Loyola College Hall for an "Induction Programme". These working teachers came from all over Jharkhand to be acquainted with the dynamics of Distance Education and to understand the requirements of the programme. Dr V P Rupam, the Regional Director of IGNOU at Ranchi Regional Centre was the main resource person. Victor and some of the Academic Counsellors were present for the occasion and were highly impressed by the enthusiasm of these "distance" learners. Gilbert had to work hard to organise this function.

A seminar given by the faculty member Mrs Rajlakhmy on "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" from 18-20 February introduced the students to character ethics and principle-centred approach to life.

Under the horticultural guidance of Ajit, the gardens in the campus are taking new shapes.

Victor has been elected the Inspector of the forthcoming ICSE examination in Jamshedpur area.

- Gilbert D'Souza

LB & HLC

Like the previous years, HLC continues to attract thousands of young boys and girls for various courses. 658 students have joined Spoken English for the January-April session 2002. This course has grown in its popularity among the youth, specially the college students, not only in the city of Bhubaneswar, but other neighbouring towns as well. There are 202 students for typing and 56 students for shorthand course. The number in these courses has come down because the job opportunities are becoming less. 42 students come for tailoring and embroidery class. These students come from different categories of the society: rich and poor of different castes and creeds, stitching and mending together. 200 students come to our reading room as they find this place very congenial and quiet for serious study. 100 students come every day for computer classes. Besides our students, 400 students of IGNOU come to our computer centre. Regent Jerome has been doing wonderful work as the Coordinator of our computer centre and as the administrator of HLC.

The number of students for personality development has increased ever since Fr McGrath joined HLC. At present there are 46 students. Besides teaching here and at XIM, he has lined up courses for the employees of Infosys Bhubaneswar and Chennai. He gave a talk on 16 February to the productivity council at Nalco Nagar. He is very popular among the young people. A morning and evening walk keeps him fit and energetic at 79.

On 11 February, Robert, Oscar, John, Jerome and Staney went to Kendrapara to inaugurate the 'Birsa Munda Colony'. We were welcomed with "Dama-Dumang". People were in high spirits. 13 'pucca' houses had been constructed by the Province for the cyclone affected people. It is a tribal village. Fr James Tharaniyil, inspite of lots of opposition, managed to complete the project. Fr Robert blessed all the houses. Oscar and James addressed the gathering in Ho. People were thrilled to listen to them. James thanked the local leaders and requested the people to live in peace and harmony. Congratulations to James for the wonderful job.

Fr Jerry is visiting all the seven slum schools looked after by HLC. He is meeting the committee members in each slum.

Fr Joe Njara has been elected the CRI President of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Archdiocese. He has just finished a course and a retreat for the MC Sisters of Bhubaneswar. He has gone to Bangalore to give a retreat to the St Joseph Sisters of Annecy.

Fr Robert is busy giving final touches to the proposed budget 2002-03 for Orissa Jesuit Society and Loyola Bhavan.

- Oscar Horo

Loyola, Bhubaneswar

The annual day held on 9 February was a grand success. About 2500 people witnessed the cultural show. The Collector-cum-District Magistrate, Shri Madhusudan Padhi IAS, applauded the School for the quality education. Fr Oscar and Fr Tony shared the platform with the guest of honour.

SANJOG, a socio-cultural organisation in collaboration with UNICEF organised a two-day workshop on Children's Rights for our Std V children on 27-28 February. A film show will follow on 3 March.

Staney conducted the entrance test and organised interviews for the KG and other children.

- P Anthonyraj

Loyola, Jamshedpur

The Graduation Nite 2002 for the tenthers was held on 2 February. Rector Vatta gave the Achievement Certificates to the outgoing students. The parents were overwhelmed seeing their sons grown up into mature "men for others" after eleven years in Loyola. Fr Dick Lane-Smith, who happened to be in Jamshedpur, addressed the gathering and delivered a thought-provoking speech. Fr Rich Kenna was the chief photographer.

The Graduation Dinner for the outgoing twelthers was organised on 8 February. The boys and girls dressed in suits and sarees, were ready to step into the world. Fr Thana took photographs, some of which came out very well.

Fr Francis Perumalil, Loyola Coaching Centre Director designate, was given a warm welcome by the Community. Francis will take over from Fr Bene Soreng who will be going for his tertianship in Goa.

PP Stan Kujur conducted the Infant Jesus Novena which was attended by a large number of faithfuls. "The devotion is spreading like wildfire", says our PP. We hope the Parish coffers fill up, too.

Br Maxi goes for regular check-ups for his diabetes. The recent tests have shown that his blood sugar level is moving towards normal. His regular walks, diet and exercise have certainly paid rich dividends.

Our ISC (213) and ICSE (151) students will begin their Board Exams on 1 March. Fr Victor Misquith has been appointed the Chief Inspector of Centres and Fr Pius is the Convenor for the 25 ICSE/ISC Schools in Jamshedpur.

TATA STEEL is encouraging 40+ age group employees to keep fit through various sports and games. In the recent Hoopsters' Cup Basketball tournament "Institutional Team" which consisted of mostly Jesuits from various institutions in the city (Frs Augustine Ezha, James Santhanam, Paul Fernandes, Augustine Vatta, Bene Soreng and Pius), lost in the final against MD Tata Steel's team with a wafer-thin margin. The spectators were amazed to see the Jesuits play with such an extraordinary accuracy. Well, all were former college level players.

LCC - "Admission rush in Hindi KG is increasing", says Director Bene. 55 students of Stds X and XII are being given special coaching to prepare them for Open School Board Exams in April.

LCC students put up an exhibition-cum-sale of various handicrafts on the campus. The visitors marvelled at the dexterity and skill of our Vocational Training Centre students. Good work, Bene.

- Pius Fernandes

Lupungutu

There was a Thanksgiving Mass on 29 January to thank the Lord for the service rendered by Br Paul to this Community. Br Paul moved to Jilling on 7 February.

From 4-6 February, Fr Provincial along with Fr Richard Lane-Smith made a short visit to our Communities in West Singhbhum.

All the three Regents went to Loyola Jamshedpur for their monthly recollection on 9 February.

Br Pascal Kerketta is the new Minister of the House. He took over officially on 9 February.

Fr John Mundu was away in Jamshedpur for a meeting and went to RTC Ranchi to give courses as a visiting Professor.

- Thomas Dungdung

Tepasai

On 3 January, nearly 130 children came for interview for KG class. The following day, the teachers went to Jathragarah for a picnic. It was a wonderful day for us.

The month of January also brought some sad news to our Community. Nine chairs were stolen from the staff room by unknown people. Fr Bene ran around and filed an FIR in Goelkera police station. The Goelkera police took this case seriously. Seeing the police attitude, the thieves who took the chairs threw them into a nearby well. The police could not identify the persons but we recovered the chairs.

On 20 January, 20 doctors from Loyola Alumni Association came for medical check-up. Nearly 700 people profited and 5 hydrocele patients were operated upon by them later in Jamshedpur. Thanks to Fr Pius and his medical team for giving their time and selfless service.

'Parents Day', celebrated on 30 January, offered an opportunity for the young students to exhibit their hidden talents. They came out with their colourful cultural programmes and made the day really beautiful by their group action songs and skits which were both in Hindi as well as English. Kudos to Sch Kishore, the Sisters and the staff for the successful event. Inspite of the cold weather, more than a thousand people thronged from all sides to witness this event. The main attractions of the day were "Karadhatham dance" and Balu Pagal Ho Gaya" skit. The Goelkera BDO, Mr Abdul Rahman was the Chief Guest. He was fascinated by the cultural programme.

The celebration of the Feast of St John de Britto was a profoundly joyous occasion for us. Our main guests of the day were Fr Provincial, Fr Richard Lane-Smith, Fr John Mundu and a number of invited guests and parishioners. Our Community hosted a fellowship banquet for them.

On 17 February, Fr Tom Nelli held a free legal aid camp. Many land problems were discussed. There are plans to hold such camps every month.

Cyril is back from his home visit. Jerry and Cyrinus of Lupungutu helped out in the Ash Wednesday liturgy.

- Kishore Lugun

XIM

Abe went to Bangalore to attend the Board meeting of the Association of the Indian Management Schools. After that he proceeded to Kolkata for another Board meeting and then to De Nobili, Dhanbad, to join the silver jubilee celebration of Emile. He is now working hard for the review exercise of the vision, mission and goal of XIMB to make it more relevant in a global economy.

George Hess had the inauguration of his new institute called Loyola Communication Centre on 9th of this month. He has now gone to Delhi to attend a meeting organised by the media.

Eric returned after a two-week's intensive course on theology and scripture at JDV (Pontifical athenaeum), Pune. He is now full of latest in theology. If you think your theology is outdated, contact Eric. He is currently working hard to improve the ambiance of the XIMB library and make it more attractive and comfortable for users.

C L George went to Jamshedpur to attend the Board meeting of XLRI. He is now busy preparing a mega budget for a mega expansion of the institute and its activities, to be presented at the next Board meeting for its approval.

Clement has registered part of the land in Baripada; the rest of it will be registered in April.

Gyan is still looking for a piece of land in Koraput to start a faith formation training centre there. Wish you all success, Gyan.

S Tony is using all his personal contacts and the influence of XIMB to get the land in Phulbani registered as a free hold property. Sch Joe Pulickal had to be hospitalised for acute gestro enteritis.

The campus looks absolutely gorgeous with its newly laid wide roads. The ground-floor of the new MDP residence is ready for use. However, the Board of Governors of XIMB decided to have the official inauguration in June when the new academic year commences. The foundation for the building was laid in 1992. The next project is the most wanted auditorium for XIMB. We hope to start construction soon.

The consultancy wing of XIMB has been active in the power sector reform and privatisation in Orissa. Due to its massive success, XIMB has been invited by Karnataka State for consultancy for the power sector reform there. We have already signed a memorandum with the government of Karnataka to provide consultancy. This new model developed by XIMB faculty involves the formation, training and empowerment of village committees in the distribution, monitoring and collection of tariffs. It has produced great results in the supply of steady power to the consumers, total eradication of illegal tapping of power and regular collection of tariffs. Many other States in India are keen on replicating this model.

- C L George

XLRI

"Birthdays are good for you", reads graffiti, "the more you have them, the longer you will live"! By this standard, our Community is indeed a long living Community. We had birthdays galore during the month of February: James, Paul, Victor, Augustine, PD and Ignatius.

Dick Lane-Smith was with us on 11 and 12 February, walking around the campus, meeting friends and strangers, and in general, touching base with XLRI. Using the currently popular cinematographic device, he was "morphing" persons and re-discovering his long-lost connections!

Joe Saldanha has given some details of his peregrinations during the past three months: Meetings of the Regional Directors of IJELP at America House, New York in December; Christmas with his family in Sydney, where the forest fires were raging and keeping everyone warm; a stopover in Malacca and a visit to the Church where the body of St Francis Xavier was brought first.

Monty, as he was known, spent six years at De Nobili School, Digwadih, after his sojourns at Sophia University, Tokyo and St Xavier's Delhi. At DNS he was an excellent teacher of both English and Moral science - on Moral Science he has written books too. Monty also raised lots of funds for the Province "Monty Fund". Though he left India in the late seventies, Monty never forgot Jamshedpur. He has been contributing to the Province until recently. He was thoroughly a Community man who brought joy and cheer all around. May God grant him life everlasting. RIP

Ms Marie O'Shea (died 14 February 2002 in Washington)

This sister of Fr Robert Dullahan (of Lupungutu fame) was a diplomat and was posted twice at Delhi. Regular gifts flowed into the Province while she was there and her home was always open for Jamshedpur Jesuits. She was extremely generous and hospitable. May God grant her joy everlasting, in His presence. RIP
