Collecting autographs by mail
Autograph collecting by mail, to the beginner, can seem both time-consuming and confusing, but with a few tips from veterans, you'll learn the ropes very quickly.
First, you have to figure out who to send to. It's very rewarding to get a superstar's autograph, but often they tend to not be the best signers. You may want to go after the checking line's center, because he often gets far less fanmail and appreciates it more. For a detailed list on who signs and
who doesn't,
Next, find out the address to the player's team. You can
get those addresses
Second, you are going to want to write a fan letter to the player. Here's a template that can be used. Dear (player's name) My name is (your name), and I am a huge (team name) fan. You are my one of my favorite players because (talk about memorable moments, or skills the player has.) Please sign my cards, I would be very grateful if you did. Thank you very much, and good luck to you and the (team name). Your fan, (your signature). Very easy! Keep in mind that players know you are actually a fan when you mention special moments in their career, and don't forget to be polite!
Now, you want to gather supplies together. To get your autographs back, you will need to enclose a stamped SASE inside. If you are wondering, stamps are .34$ US-US, .60 Cdn. $ Canada-US, .60$ US-Canada, and 3.50$ US-US for Priority mail (useful for mailing hockey pucks to players). Enclose your SASE, letter and cards inside your bigger envelope, and you're ready to mail! In my experience it could take anywhere from 3 days to a year and a half to get them back (I've heard of cards taking 5 years, in one instance!), although an average request is 3 weeks to 6 months. So, be patient, and good luck!
Now you will want to rub down the card, so the ink sticks to the card. I split the card in thirds visually, and give each third 15-25 swipes with my hand, depending on how glossy it is. Most people sprinkle baby powder on the card, but I like it this way. I can do this in 30 seconds per card, but unless you've done this before, go slow as to not bend the corners.
