The region consists of the famed Kashmir valley and the Northern areas. Before independence, the Region consisted of the districts of Anantnag, Baramulla and Muzaffarabad. After Pakistan's invasion after independence, the entire Muzaffarabad district except few pockets of Uri and Karnah came under its illegal occupation. Presently, the Region consists of six districts - Pulwama, Badgam, Kupwara, Anantnag, Srinagar and Baramulla. The Indus and Jhelum rivers flow through this Region. The former is entirely in POK ( Pakistan Occupied Kashmir ) now.
The Region has a majority of muslims. However, Hindu Kashmiri Pandits and sikhs are a significant minority. Due to Pakistan's continuous propoganda and interference, a large number of young men were enrolled - by money, force and `jehad' - into a pseudo militancy movement, which is now dying its natural death. Pakistan has maintained a political presence through the APHC ( Hurriyat) who are made to raise unwarranted hue and cry in exchange of money and promises of political power.Region is mostly pro-India except for a few politically motivated sections.
The population was entirely hindu till when the self-converted ruler forcibly converted the populace. The region has seen ethnic cleansing of hindus/sikhs at an unprecedented scale in the past decade due to Pakistani terrorists.Read about pre-independence history of Kashmir.
