JAMMU

The Jammu region consists of regions South of the Pir Panjal Ranges. Its entire Western border touches Pakistan. Before independence, the region had six districs - Jammu, Riasi, Udhampur, Kathua, Mirpur and Poonch. The Mirpur district and large parts of Poonch district were invaded by Pakistan immediatly after independence and since then lie under its illegal occupation.Riasi district was later reorganised into Doda and Rajouri districts. The Chenab and Ravi rivers flow through it and into Pakistan.

The Region has a mixed population of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. While Muslims are more concentrated in parts of Poonch, Rajaouri and Doda, Hindus are spread all over with major concentrations in Rajaouri, Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur and parts of Doda. The sikhs are concentrated in Poonch, Jammu and Kathua.Saw Hindu Dogra rule and later sikh rule.

The Region has seen no indeginous militancy - only terrorism by Pakistani terrorists. Many muslims in Poonch, Rajaouri and Doda were terrorised into militancy but no support for Pakistan and its brand of Islam exists. Indian to the core and wants to remain so.
