Changing Opposites

“He wasn’t always evil you know.” Minerva McGongall said to the 3 teenagers sitting in front of her. “He didn’t turn until our 7th year, when the Chamber of secrets was opened. So I know, that there is still good in him, if only little.”

“Please tell us what you mean.” Hermione Granger a 6th year said.

“It will be hard, to remember all those memories. If you really want me to tell you—.”

“Please, Professor,” Harry Potter put in.

“All right, I should start at the beginning, then.

“I was 10 years old when I got the letter, admitting me to Hogwarts. Of course I was thrilled—I could leave My Muggle father and my orthodox Muggle stepmother. My father didn’t want me to go, but I did, and I was so much happier at school then I was at home. I had friends, for the first time in a long time—people like me.

“I was in my second year when I met Tom, he seemed to shine about Hogwarts, not like any other student there. We immediately became friends, even though I was a Gryffindor, and he was Slytherin. It didn’t matter, *everyone* liked Tom. My friends and I were mischief-makers the first 3 years of school, but we calmed down a bit in our forth year, when the forest’s creatures became out of hand. There were animals all over the castle, some dangerous… we had to be careful. I turned to Transfiguration; Dumbledore was the Professor then. It was my best subject, when I heard about Amangi, I immediately wanted to become one. Dumbledore was extremely supportive of me, and he helped me work it out. It was quite hard magic, but I managed it at the end of my 6th year. My friends were very happy for me—I had overcome a great obstacle-it was Tom who had the idea that I become a transfiguration teacher.

“In our 7th year, Professor Dippet, the Headmaster, announced that a girl had been petrified, a Ravenclaw 5th year. The whole school was in an uproar, everyone was afraid that the monster would come after them. Then they found out what had caused it- the Chamber of Secrets had been opened by a student. Tom and I had talked, earlier that year, and he wanted to stay at Hogwarts for summer break, and he was living in a Muggle orphanage you know. I knew that wouldn’t be a possibility if the monster was not caught. Tom was Head Boy, and I was a prefect.

“The monster was going after the Muggle-born and the ½ and ½. I’m a pure blood, but Tom said it wouldn’t have mattered if I were Muggle-born, he would never let anything hurt me. Then the day came that a girl died.

“One night, Tom came to me and said that our worries were over. He said that he was going to turn in the one who was controlling the monster, I encouraged him—I didn’t understand why he hadn’t done it sooner—what I didn’t’ realize was that the one he was turning in was Hagrid. I felt horrible- Hagrid had been one of my friends too. Tom looked like he felt the same, but with Hagrid expelled, the attacks stopped.

“At the end of our 7th year, I caught Tom in Dippet’s office, standing over him. Dippet was dead. I remember trying to scream—I—I couldn’t, I didn’t believe what was right in front of my eyes. Tom turned to me. ‘I don’t believe this!’ I screamed to him, backing up.

“’believe it or not. Come with me, Minerva, and we can rule the wizarding kingdom.’ He said.

“’No way! What’s happened to you, Tom? You used to be so good, not evil.’

“’evil? There is no good nor evil, there is only power, and those to week to seek it.’ He smiled at me, a dark smile. ‘I’m changing opposites, Minerva. If you will not come with me, you will hurt—a deeper hurt then you have ever felt before! I will not kill you, but everyone that you love—everyone that you have cared for in your life.’ He then flew out the window. I couldn’t understand it. I called Professor Dumbledore, and told him about Tom—but he was gone.” McGongall stopped, finished.

“What do you reckon made him change?” Ron Weasley asked.

“I don’t know.” She smiled “we are late for lunch, boys, Miss Granger—let’s go.” McGongall said and hurried them out of her office. Later that day, Hermione asked Ron and Harry:

“Do you think that Tom’s the reason McGongall never got married?”

“I dunno.” Harry said, there was a dazed look on his face.

The End (for now)
