Jami slowly eased herself up in the bed next to the sleeping form. She pulled her knees up against her chest, wrapping her arms around them. Goosebumps appeared on the naked flesh of her arm, and she shivered slightly.

Her gaze traveled over the man next to her. His blue hair spilled out on the white pillowcase below his head, looking like someone had murdered a smurf or something crazy like that. He had pulled the comforter of the hotel bed up around his face, stopping just short of his nose.

He shifted in bed, and one eye lazily opened to see her watching him. He yawned and moved to sit up in the bed next to her. The only light in the room was that falling from a streetlight outside the hotel room window.

"What are you doing awake?" he asked, another yawn escaping his perfect lips. Jami's face turned downward as she struggled with the inner demon that was playing with her mind.

She peaked up through her lashes finally and whispered. "Where would you be?" Confusion shadowed Jeff's face, "What are you talking about?"

"If I weren't here. Who would you be with? And do you wish it was that way now?" Jami asked quietly. "Jami, it's 3:30 in the morning, and you are very much here." Jeff sighed loudly.

"Jeff, it's just that.....I don't feel like your heart is here. And I want to know where it is. Who it is with. And have you felt this way long? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's just my insecurities playing with my head....but do you wish I was someone else? Or that you were just single?" Jami asked.

Silence echoed through the room.
***
I wonder where your heart is
'Cause it sure don't feel like its here
Sometimes I think you wish
That I would just disappear
Have I got it all wrong?
Have you felt this way long?
Are you already gone?

Do you feel lonely
When you're here by my side
Does the sound of freedom
Echo in your mind
Do you wish you were by yourself
Or that I was someone else
Anyone else.
***
"Who would you love?" Jami whispered. Jeff refused to meet her gaze, and his silence just prodded her questioning along. "Where would you go?" Jami asked again.

"Probably to sleep." Jeff said in a monotone. He laid back down on the bed, hoping to stop this conversation.

***
Where would you be
If You weren't here with me
Where would you go
If you were single and free
Who would you love
Would it be me
Where would you be?
***
But Jami was never one to be deterred. "Do you feel like I'm somehow holding you back? Like I'm tying you down, keeping you from reaching your dreams."

"Jami, for Christ Sakes, you are my manager, my valet and my girlfriend...not a fucking rope." Jeff growled. "You know that's not what I'm talking about." Jami said, her voice never raising from the whisper.

"What do you want for me to say?" Jeff asked, frustration building in his voice. "What if you hadn't met me til just this minute. Who would you be with? Where would you be? Would you still fall in love with me?" Jami asked.

Frustration snapping in his voice Jeff harshly replied, "Well, I'd think you were a fucking psycho for being in my bed at 3:30 in the morning, wanting to just 'talk' about things, that's for sure."

Jami slowly slid herself back underneath the blankets on the bed, then she turned to lay on her side, her back towards Jeff. Tears were starting to silently roll down her cheeks, hanging from her eyelashes.

***
I don't wanna hold you back
No I don't wanna slow you down
I don't wanna make you feel
Like you are tied up and bound
'Cause that's not what love's about
If there's no chance we can work it out
Tell me now
Oh tell me, tell me now

Where would you be
If you weren't here with me
Where would you go
If you were single and free
Who would you love
Would it be me
Where would you be
***
Jeff sighed, moving his body so it was up against hers. "Jami, what brought this on?" He asked. Silence screamed through the night, as Jami fought her tears back.

"Jami?" Jeff asked, worried about her silence. "When did I become the enemy." she asked, before she quietly slipped out of bed and away from his arms.

He watched as she slipped out of the hotel room door, dressed in only her pajamas. His fingers curled in the bedsheets where she had laid just moments before. Then he found himself whispering to her departed presence, "Where would you be, if you were single and free."
***
Have I become the enemy
Is it hard to be yourself
In my company

Where would you be
If you weren't here with me
Where would you go
If you were single and free
Who would you love
Would it be me?
Where would you be?
