Title: What Might've Been
Author: Jami Lynn
Chapter: 1
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the wrestlers used in this story, 'cause if I did, I'd be busy with them right now *grin*. The song belongs to the one and only Texas Little. And don't bother suing me...all you'd get is a half eaten ham sandwich and a bag of chips from 2 years ago.
Distribution: Ask me if you can use it, more than likely I will say yes.
Rating: So far, it's a PG-13
Content: Nothing bad as of yet, probably won't be anything to bad either....maybe some cussing.
Spoilers: Um...anything can happen and I'm just writing as I go, so I don't know yet *L*.
Summary: Again, I have some things I just really need to work out, so I'm doing it in story format. I'm hoping this helps my battling emotions. Anyway, the shane in the story is Shane Helms, 'cause he most resembles my ex. Anyway, on with the story.
Feedback: I need feedback like I need air! So give it to me, babee! I have been suffocating lately....so please, send in the feedback.

April swept the small broom in her hands in a wide arch, pushing the small pile of dirt closer to her. She was almost done with the cleaning tasks that came along with her overnight shift at the gas station she worked at.

She felt the air stir around her when someone opened the door and she looked up. Her hand quickly grasped the broom handle that had nearly slipped from them when her eyes met the eyes of the man who had just walked in.

The sickly familiar fluttering in her stomach reminded her heart to pound. Dressed in casually baggy jeans, a white t-shirt and a blue checkered unbuttoned shirt over that. Her eyes traveled across the achingly familiar face, all the way up to where his short, spiked, brown hair was tipped with green.

"Hey." He smiled at her and the fluttering in her stomach increased. Realizing that she hadn't said anything yet and was just looking at him dumbfounded she let herself fall into his welcoming hug.

"Sh-shane, what are you doing here?" April asked, pulling herself out of his embrace. Her mind raced to remember the last time they had spoken. It had been in that very station, nearly 5 months ago. They had parted way on not so friendly terms that night and hadn't spoken since.

"I was in town and saw your car, so I thought I'd stop by and catch up with an old friend." Shane said. April leaned the broom against a small ice cream freezer, and on the pretense of throwing something away, she moved so the small freezer was in between them. The smile on Shane's face dimmed when he realized that April had purposely put space between them.

"How have you been?" he asked. "I've been great. I'm healthy. I have a social life on nights I don't work, and I have a job that I actually like. I have the best of all world's." April smiled.

Shane's hand reached out to grab the broom and leaned some of his weight on it. "I guess a lot has changed since we last talked." Shane said quietly. April nodded as her mind traveled back to how they had been at one time. NIghts of sitting in the park, watching the stars, and talking about anything and everything. Nights of sleeping in each others arms, feeling completely immersed in love.

***
Sure I think about you now and then
But it's been a long long time
I've got a good life now, I've moved on
So when you cross my mind

I try not to think about
What might have been
'cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can't go back again
There's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What might have been.

April finally brought herself into the present and saw Shane watching her with eyes that were glazed with past memories. "Do you ever wonder where we both would be if we had stayed together?" Shane asked.

April swallowed the conflicting emotions that were playing keep away with her heart. "Sometimes." was all she said. "I miss you." Shane said, moving to step around the ice cream freezer. April started to back up, fear reminding her of how he had left her with a broken heart.

The air shifted around them as a couple walked in, clutching each other against the cold night. April moved to stand behind the counter, her eyes following the couple, afraid to look at Shane.

Shane removed his bulky coat and laid it over the top of the freezer before he walked back to the the fountain area. A whir a few seconds later signaled he was getting a cappaccino. A few moments passed before he was back in front of her. Trying to keep from trembling from how near he was, and that look in his eyes, she took his money and handed him his change. As her fingertips brushed his palm, a shiver raced through her body. Luckily the couple had come up behind him.

As she rang their purchases up, bagged them and took their money, she reminded herself to get her emotions under control. She couldn't let him weave his spell over her again. She's fallen for it to many times in the past.

We could sit and talk about this all night long
And wonder why we didn't last
Yes they might have be the best days
We will ever know
But we'll have to leave them in the past

I try not to think about
What might have been
'Cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can't go back again
There's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What might have been

When the couple left April turned to look at Shane, who had one hand around the broom handle while the other brought the cappuccino up to his lips. Small talk passed between them for half an hour before he brought it back to the more personal edge.

"I saw Kara last night." Shane said. The name felt like a thousand bee stings across her body and she fought the urge to throw up. Kara, the woman Shane had been sleeping with for the last few weeks of their first attempt at a relationship. Their relationship had ended for reasons that had nothing to do with Kara. In fact, April hadn't even known Kara existed until after their second failed attempt at a relationship. Shane had dumped her that time to be with Kara, a face April had realized when Kara and Shane had become an official item less than 24 hours after Shane had massacred April's heart.

At first April had wanted to think the best, and had decided not to hate her because she was with Shane. She wanted to hate her because she was a horrible human being. After talking to her, April knew that Shane had cheated on her with Kara. A fact Shane didn't dispute.

April collided into the present when fingers appeared in front of her face and snapped. "huh?" April asked. "I was telling you that Kara and I broke it off 4 months ago. She had some insane idea that we would get back together and end up married. I told her that we were over forever and that I would never get married to her." Shane said with a heavy sigh.

"how'd she take that one?" April heard herself asking, wondering where her voice came from. "Not well. But she had to know. Anyway, I was wondering if you wanted to go grab a bite to eat sometime while I'm in town?" he asked.

"Uh, maybe. Email me and we'll talk about it. I really don't have time to now. I need to finish cleaning and all." her eyes checked the clock which read 3:00 AM. 'Forgive me for lying God.' April sent up a quick silent prayer.

"Oh yeah, sure. I need to go anyway. Great seeing you again. I'll email you." Shane smiled one of his special smiles at her while he slipped on his coat, but April avoided his eyes.

That same old look in your eyes
It's a beautiful night
I'm so tempted to stay
But to much time has gone by
We should just say goodbye
And turn and walk away

I try not to think about
What might have been
'Cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can't go back again
There's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What might have been

April watched him walk out to his car, and she kept watching until his tail lights disappeared. 'Back to watching Raw to get a glimpse of him.' she thought as her hand grabbed the broom.

She felt the warmth of where his hand had just been. "Yeah, I do wonder what might have been.....a lot." April said out loud to the empty store.

***
No we'll never know
What might have been
