Jeff wrapped his arms around Jami's tiny frame. "Baby, I can't believe this
is happening to you. It's not fair. I mean, you take good car of yourself and
your only 20...your not suppose to die." Jeff muttered in shock. "I
know, but I talked to the doctor. There is nothing left to do for me. My
kidney's have completely shut down. Dialysis would only prolong the end...and it
wouldn't affect the quality of my life. they won't be able to find a transplant
in time." Jami sighed. Jeff didn't know what do say. He remembered the
first time they had met.
He looked up from where he was talking with Matt at the SUBWAY counter. She
had walked into the shop, giggling with her friends. She was 5'2", petite,
with a tan complexion. She was dressed in dark blue jeans and a blue t-shirt
with the words, "I like your boyfriend" written in white across it.
Her brown hair was pulled off her face with a white kerchief. Her brown eyes
sparkled with laughter. He watched one of the other women in the group march up
to Jason (christian) and start talking to him. He tuned everything out until he
heard her friend say, "Last but not least, this is Jami and she's a huge
WWF fan, especially of the Hardyz." he smiled as she shot them all a shy
smile. 'Jami...nice name.' he thought to himself.
He slid up next to her and inhaled deeply, she smelled like apples. He loved how
she smelled. "Sorry they aren't so talkative...they aren't trying to be
rude or anything, they are just starving." he whispered to her. She turned
to him with a huge smile on her face. "That's okay. I totally understand. I
would never want to get in between hungry wrestlers and food. I don't have a
death wish." Jeff laughed...she had a sense of humor. that was good.
Members of her group began to order food and she asked, "aren't you going
to order with your group?" "I'll just order after you." he told
her. He coughed nervously before asking, "So, where are you guys staying
at?" "Oh, at the Marriott. What about y'all?" Jami answered in a
heavy Iowa accent. Jeff told her he was staying at the same hotel. He invited
her and her friends to chill in their hotel room. Her friends and her did come
and hang out with him and his friends. he had never connected with someone so
quickly before.
Jeff held Jami crushed against his body, afraid to let her go. "Jeff,
it'll be okay. Just because I won't be alive doesn't mean I won't still be here
for you. I won't ever leave you! You know that don't you?" Jami cried,
clinging to him. Jeff gently rocked her back and forth, searching for words to
express how he was feeling. He thought back to their first date.
Jeff walked up to her house, trying to calm his nerves. He'd taken a week off
of the WWF to recover from bruised ribs. They had been in Canada before that,
and on his way back to North Carolina he had stopped to see Jami. He'd called
her early that morning and she had said she would love to meet him that night.
So, he drove down and now he was standing on her front porch, nervous as hell.
He knocked and he could hear her pounding down the stairs. She threw open the
door and smiled at him. He stood there, just looking at her. She looked so
beautiful. She was wearing a pair of short white shorts that accented her lean,
tan legs. She was wearing a plain white tank top with a short sleeved, button
down, denim shirt over it. Her hair was pulled up into a high ponytail with a
pair of sunglasses perched on the top of her head. Her face was flushed from the
run to the door, and she looked genuienly happy to see him. "Hey! Come in!
I just have to slip on a pair of shoes and I'm ready to go." she told him
as he stepped into her front hallway.
Jami sat on a chair, pulling on and tying a pair of white tennis shoes. Jeff
looked around her hall, taking in everything. The floors were wooden and the
walls were an off white color. She had pictures all along the wall. There was a
senior year photo of herself. There was a family photo of her, her mom, her dad,
her sister, her brother and her grandma. Next to that were photos of her sister
and brother. After that photograph there was another large photo of a huge group
of people. He stepped closer to get a better look. "That's a group picture
of most of my friends. they got it as a housewarming present when I bought the
house." she explained to him. He nodded and noticed that Jami was ready to
go. He placed a hand on the small of her back as they walked out.
Later that night they were walking alongside a lake at the local park. They ahd
went ot a small diner and then to a movie earlier that night. "Did you have
fun tonight?" Jeff asked her. "Oh yes! It wasn't quite what I
expected. It was better than I expected." Jami told him. "what did you
expect?" Jeff asked her, unsure if he wanted to hear her answer. "I
don't know exactly. Dinner and a movie seemed so normal. With you I had no idea
what to expect. I wouldn't have been suprised if you had taken me bungee
jumping, which, believe me, I'm glad we didn't. I had so much fun just being
with you." Jami told him honestly. Jeff smiled widely at her.
Even later that night Jeff took Jami home. he walked her to her front door. She
unlocked it and stood, facing him, under the porch light. "you wanna come
in?" Jami asked him. "I do, but I better not. If I go in, I won't want
to come out." Jeff smiled at her. Jami grinned, "Jeff, I had a lot of
fun tonight." Jeff ran a hand thru her hair, "yeah, me too. Can
we....do this again sometime?" Jeff asked her. Jami nodded, "And I
was, uh, wondering if you and Tasha would like to come to a match in a few
states over. Adam (EDGE) wants Tasha to come watch him get his butt
kicked." Jeff grinned. Jami laughed, "yeah, I'll be there and I doubt
anything will keep Tasha away." Then she kissed his cheek and disappeared
behind a closed door.
"Baby, what all did the doctor say?" Jeff asked Jami, dreading the
answer. Jami sighed and pulled back from him. "He just said that I had a
kidney disease that had advanced so far that the kidneys had just shut down. He
said I had just a couple weeks left. He said my heart isn't strong enough to
support a surgery of any kind. I can try fighting it...but I won't win."
She looked up into his green eyes and was suprised to find him crying. "Jami,
I've never known you to give up anything without a fight." His mind flashed
back to their first fight.
He had called her the night before Wrestlemania to tell her that he had been
scheduled for the main event. His brother, Matt was suppose to be the one facing
Chris Irvine (Jericho) for the WWF championship belt. But earlier that night
Matt had been hurt during a house show against Chris. There was no way he could
wrestle. So, it fit into the storyline for Jeff to demand to take his place to
get payback for his injured brother. Jami had been so happy to hear about the
match. "Oh Jeff, I wish I could be there! But, I'd have to fly out and fly
back and I'd never get home at a decent hour and I have a major test at 6:45
a.m. plus work all day after that." she told him reasonably. "But you
have to be there! Skip everything!" he had demanded of her, not thinking.
"Jeff, you aren't being fair!" Jami told him. "Jami...it's
Wrestlemania! This is my biggest match yet! I'm going against Chris Irvine for
the WWF championship! You have to be there to cheer me on!" Jeff argued.
"Jeff! I can't just up and leave everything on a days notice! I have
school! Midterms are this week! I have work!" Jami argued back. "If
it's the money from the job your worried about, you know i make enough to
support you." Jeff told her. He heard Jami utter a strangled cry before he
heard the dialtone ringing loudly in his ear. He slammed the phone down in
frustration. He knew he had made a stupid move in demanding Jami do anything or
for suggesting that she was worried about just money. She was strong willed and
did what she felt was right, not what was demanded of her. He picked up the
phone to call her back and apologize.
"Have you told your parents yet?" he asked her. She nodded,
"yeah, they took it pretty hard. My mom just kept muttering that they were
suppose to go before me. My dad just stared off into space, trying not to cry.
My sister just hugged me and my brother told me he loved me and ran out of the
room." she whispered. Jeff thought back to the first time he met her
family.
"Would you relax! They are just my family...not a firing squad!"
Jami told him, squeezing his hand as they pulled into her parents driveway.
"Same difference." Jeff told her and she giggled. Her dad and mom met
them at teh door. They offered Jeff a smile and a handshake while giving Jami a
hug. they ushered them into the cozy living room. Jami and Jeff sat together on
a couch while her parents sat on a love seat. Jami's sister Traci sat next to
Jami on the couch while Jami's brother Travis sprawled out on the floor. travis
looked at Jeff strangely. "Are you really THE Jeff Hardy?" Travis
finally asked him. Jeff grinned, "The one...the only." Travis just
looked at him in awe. "Jami and Traci...can you help your mother with
dinner?" Jami's dad asked. The 3 women left the room and Jami's dad turned
to Jeff. "So, do you plan on saying in the WWF or getting a real job?"
Jeff coughed nervously. "Sir, the WWF is a real job. It's a very good job.
And yes, I do plan on staying there." Jami's dad narrowed his eyes at Jeff.
"Just so we understand each other young man...no one will ever be good
enough for my daughter." Jeff heard someone cough behind him. "Excuse
me daddy. But Jeff is more than good enough for me. And I'd prefer you didn't
treat him like he's at a firing squad." she winked at Jeff. The rest of the
night went uneventful and in time, her family grew to love him.
Jeff nodded, "I imagine they would take it hard." Jami shrugged,
"yeah, I guess so." "Have you told anyone else?" he asked
her. "Just Amy and Tasha." she muttered. Jeff nodded in understanding.
He had been on the road for the last week or so, and Amy and Tasha had been
nearby. He also knew that Jami had wanted to tell him in person. He thought back
to when Jami had met his family for the first time.
"My dad and brother will be back in a little bit." Jeff told her,
sitting on the steps of his front porch. He pulled her down next to him and
wrapped his arms around her. "Do you think your dad will like me?" she
asked, nerves setting in. "Baby, he's going to love you." he replied,
kissing her nose. Then he kissed her lips. The kiss soon grew more passionate.
Jeff grinned when he broke away and heard matt comment, "Do you think she
realizes what he's doing to her? It's disgusting!" Their dad laughed as
Jami covered her face with her hands. "Dad, Matt...this is Jami." Jeff
said, laughing at her embarassment. "I'd hope so! Otherwise you'd have some
explaining to do!" Matt joked. "Hi Jami, I'm Jeff's dad and this is
his nimirod of a brother." Jami nodded. "Nice to meet you." she
said thru her hands. Jeff grabbed her hands and pulled them away from her face.
She blushed but smiled at the guys. Jeff's dad and brother fell in love with her
at that moment.
"Baby, I love you." Jeff whispered. "What can I do to make
this easier for you?" Jami asked him, worry wrinkling her brow. Jeff pursed
his lips, "Stay alive." he told her.
