| Lingering Questions |
| JKR does a good job of tying up loose ends, of leaving little bits and clues so that readers can solve the mystery themselves (not me - I suck at it), but there are still some unanswered questions that are bugging me. Will JKR tell us the answers by the end of the series, or will we always be left to wonder? *Why was the Potter's house destroyed when Voldemort killed them? *How did everyone know what had happened? (In Prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius explains that he went to check on Peter, but he wasn't there, and there was no sign of a struggle, so he went to check on James and Lily but they were already dead. But he met Hagrid there, and Dumbledore had told Hagrid, so how did Dumbledore know?) *Why did the Sorting Hat take so long with Seamus and Neville? (Did it maybe want to sort Neville into Hufflepuff?) *Why didn't Snape go to Madam Pomfrey when Fluffy bit his leg? (He goes to Filch instead.) *What was the "faint whispering" Harry heard while searching the restricted section under his cloak? *How exactly did Percy get Scabbers? *Why haven't we yet seen an Astronomy class? (You'll note that the Astronomy professor's name is Sinistra. Possibly "sinister"?) *Just what is the deal with Harry's eyes? *Why are house-elves subservient to wizards? (They're supposedly very powerful, so something must have happened to make them this way.) *Where do Dementors come from? *If Sirius was able to escape Azkaban, is it possible that others could have escaped and the Dementors don't know? (Remember, JKR tells us that Dementors can't see.) *What exactly is the "bond" that Dumbledore mentions between Harry and Wormtail? *Who else was on the list of registered Animagi? (Dumbledore, perhaps?) *What happened during the goblin rebellions? (They're mentioned a lot.) *Would Harry and Hermione's future selves have appeared on the Marauder's Map when Lupin looked at it? *If an Animagi's animal form is significant, why is McGonagall a cat, Sirius a dog, and James a stag? (We all know why Peter is a rat.) *What has Pettigrew been doing since the end of Goblet of Fire? *What exactly is "behind the veil" at the Department of Mysteries? *Why did the Marauders hate Snape so much? And why did Snape hate them? (To start out with, I mean. I think eventually they did so much to each other that they had reasons to continue hating each other. Remember, James told Lily it was "just the fact that he exists".) *Was Lily Potter really a Muggle? (Or maybe Petunia is just a Squib?) *Why haven't we learned more about the Potters? (I mean the rest of Harry's family. He had grandparents, of course, how come we don't hear about them? Does Petunia not like her entire family that she never talks about her own parents?) *What does the "J" in "R.J. Lupin" stand for? *Who was the eavesdropper who overheard Trelawney's first prediction? (Was it Mundungus? He was banned from the Hog's Head around the same time that Trelawney made the prediction.) *What happened to change Fudge's mind about Voldemort? (In Prisoner of Azkaban, Fudge talks about how Voldemort is alone and powerless, but give him back his best servant, and who knows how quickly he will rise again. So then why doesn't he believe Harry and Dumbledore in Goblet of Fire?) *Is Lupin really James? *If Lupin and James did switch places, is it possible that Lily is still alive somewhere? *How important is Ginny Weasley? (On JKR's website, she mentions that Ginny is the first female Weasley born in quite some time.) |
