| Colors Purple is used a lot in the HP books. (Lavender Brown, the violently purple Knight Bus, people - usually Uncle Vernon - get purple in the face). *Purple is often associated with royalty, and its attributes (according to my Little Giant Encyclopedia of Superstitions) are power, majesty, fortitude, and wisdom. *People that wear a lot of purple are said to be swayed by success, prestige, and power. Hmmm... Harry's eyes are bright green - his mother's eyes, as we are often told. *Attributes of the color green are virility, courage, honesty, candor (fair and unprejudiced), brilliance, and ardor (passion). *People with green eyes are said to be creative. This should help us find out a little about Lily Potter. **Interesting note** The Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra) is green. Harry remembers a bright green light. Ron's eyes are blue. *Attributes of the color blue are friendship, frankness, truth, sincerity, earnestness, innocence, virtue, and steadfastness. *People with blue eyes are said to be intelligent and have divine powers. Hmm... Remember the brain that attacked Ron in the Department of Mysteries? Have we seen the end of that? Hermione's eyes are brown. *I couldn't find any attributes of the brown, but people who wear a lot of brown are said to be grasping, sensual, honest, and plain-spoken. *People with brown eyes (I laughed at this) are said to flirt before marriage but are loyal afterwards. Well, there's no arguing with the loyalty. **Interesting note** James Potter's eyes were hazel, which is light brown flecked with gray or green. Remember, green eyes are creative, and gray eyes are calculating. Ooh...the plot thickens. All of the Weasleys (and Lily Potter) have red hair. *Attributes of the color red are animation, life, success, and love. *People with red hair are supposedly unlucky. **Interesting note** Red (and gold) sparks come out of Harry's wand when he first buys it. Voldemort's eyes are red. And Harry's red disarming (Expelliarmus) spell collides with Voldemort's when they duel in GoF. Body Parts Dumbledore, Voldemort, Snape, Dobby, Mr. Ollivander, Trelawney, and goblins all have long fingers. Is this supposed to signify great magical power? Remember, Voldemort and Dumbledore are the two most powerful wizards in the world, and house-elfs are said to possess very powerful magic (they just can't use it). The only hitch in this theory is Trelawney, as she's a right old hack. JKR mentions noses a lot. Dumbledore has a long, crooked nose. McGonagall has a long, pointed nose. Dobby has a long, thin nose. Ron has a long nose. Snape has a large, hooked nose. Krum also has a hooked nose. Winky's nose looks like a large tomato. Moody's missing a large chunk of his nose. Cedric had a straight nose. Are long noses, like long fingers, supposed to signify power? Look at everyone with long noses. Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Dobby are all supposedly very powerful. What does this tell us about Ron? Is there something we don't know about him - something maybe he doesn't even know? Eyes are also very important. Chamber of Secrets mentions eyes a lot, as a clue to what lies within the chamber (the Basilisk). Eye color is discussed above. Numbers 7 appears quite frequently. There are 7 books in the HP series, corresponding to each of the 7 years of study at Hogwarts. Harry was born in the 7th month (July). There are 7 players on a Quidditch team. Gryffindor tower is on the 7th floor. *7 is associated with mysticism and the supernatural, and is supposed to be a lucky number. 12 is a recurring number throughout the HP series. Did you notice that in every chapter 12, we learn something important? Think about every book's chapter 12: "The Mirror of Erised" (SS), "The Polyjuice Potion" (CoS), "The Patronus" (PoA), "The Triwizard Tournament" (GoF), and "Professor Umbridge" (OotP). Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Dumbledore's watch has 12 hands. There are 12 doors in the circular room in the Department of Mysteries. There are 12 school governors. *According to the ancient Babylonians, the number 12 was both sacred and unlucky. Romans thought the number 12 was magical. *12 represents transmutation and change. 13 is also very important, if only because every chapter 13 features a cameo appearance by the book's bad guy. "Nicholas Flamel" (SS), "The Very Secret Diary" (CoS), "Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw" (PoA), "Mad-Eye Moody" (GoF), and "Detention with Dolores" (OotP). *13, as you know, is considered very unlucky. It represents resurrection. |
