| Kamea, a Hawaiian name, means the one and only. She is the first child born to a human/Vulcan couple to survive past the first week of life. Her father, Lorian, was a premiere neuro-biologist on Vulcan, whose lifes work was seeking a way for Vulcans and humans to peacefully co-exist. Her mother, Kalea Ululani, was a brilliant engineer with dreams of Starfleet. Together, they raised the half-human, half-Vulcan in an isolated cove on Oahu. When she was old enough to attend school, they passed her off as a full human by covering her Vulcan ears with her long hair and teaching her to accept and embrace her emotions. No one knew of Kameas true heritage until she was in high school, when she became the victim of an unfortunate prank that revealed her true identity. Lorians dislike for his Vulcan heritage did not deter him from teaching his daughter about her culture, although he did not teach her much. She took it upon herself to learn and most of her knowledge of Vulcan comes from her own research. Her human education comes from being raised on Earth, among humans, and from Kalea. |
| At the age of nine, Kamea discovered that she had a natural affinity for machines and decided to pursue a career in engineering, like her mother, much to her fathers dismay. Kalea was fixing Lorians shuttle pod but had been unable to locate the source of the malfunction; when she went inside for a bathroom break, young Kamea found and fixed the problem by the time her mother returned. Kalea taught Kamea everything she knew about engineering, and eventually Kalea and Lorian realized that their daughter was a prodigy. During high school, Kamea participated actively in many organizations, including student government. She was elected student body president by an overwhelming majority, and even after her Vulcan heritage was revealed her friends did not abandon her. Bolstered by her classmates approval, Kamea opted to attend college and major in engineering, hoping to fulfill her mothers dream of Starfleet. She was accepted into the Massachusetts Institute for Technology, where she majored in starship engineering, and spent her summers in Oahu with her parents. College was not a challenge for Kamea, though she did have difficulty adjusting, and she graduated with her masters, summa cum laude, in 2020. However, by the time she was eligible for Starfleet, the head officers were wary of the entire Vulcan population, and she was denied entrance based on her heritage. She appealed every year for the better part of three decades, unwilling to accept their decision, and moved to San Francisco at the age of 25, hoping that her application would be reviewed. Though she is half-Vulcan, her fathers reluctance to teach her much about the Vulcan culture prompted her to think of herself as human. After her graduation from college, in order to secure a job, she adopted the ruse she used as a child, covering her ears with her hair and masquerading as a full human, intent on one day joining Starfleet. She accepted a position with a space exploration company called Hitchhikers Galaxy Exploration, who only studied planets in Earths solar system. Kamea spent almost twenty years with them, manufacturing and repairing space-worthy vessels, secretly working on her own warp engines thanks to schematics she borrowed from her fathers shuttle pod. She had several relationships with humans, but none that lasted very long. She was searching for what her mother called the instant connection, something Kalea claimed to have felt for Lorian. Apparently, none of Kameas dalliances held what she was looking for and never developed into anything long-term. Lorians dream of a Vulcan/human alliance seemed to have reached a breakthrough, when he believed he had discovered a way to equalize humans and Vulcans through a procedure that involved manipulating several synapses in the brain. When no one was willing to undergo the dangerous operation, Kamea volunteered, hoping that her life would be greatly improved and that she would be recognized by both the Vulcan High Command and the human government as the first Vulcan/human hybrid. She underwent the operation at the age of 50. At first, the procedure appeared not to have worked. There were no obvious changes in either Kameas mental capabilities or her behavior, and the operation was deemed a failure with no lasting consequences. However, soon after the procedure was performed Kamea and her parents were attacked by a rebel sect of Andorians, who had been approached by a radical faction determined to prevent an alliance between humans and Vulcans. They killed Kalea and Lorian, and Kamea attacked, driven by the pure elemental anger that Vulcans work so hard to suppress. The Andorians fled, and Lorian barely alive used his last ounce of strength to pass his katra into his daughter, so that he might always be with her. After the death of her parents, Kamea ran from Earth using her fathers shuttle pod and traveled from system to system, hiding from the Andorians. She took odd jobs on many different planets and rented her services as an engineer out to the highest bidder. She spent some time with both Klingons, Xyrillians, Rigellians, and the Dominion, studying their technology, and eventually managed to convert a short-range Dominion escape pod into a long-range shuttle pod, which she now uses. She discovered that her fathers procedure was successful that her mental capabilities were greatly enhanced by the operation but that the zones accessed can only be opened during times of great emotional turmoil. She worked very hard to make certain that she never lost control of her anger, but it has not always been for her to decide. |
