The Collector

Lesson plan by Jamie Fein

Day 1

What’s going on for today:

Today we are jumping into The Collector by John Fowles.  The students are going to read a scene from the middle of the play just to get a feel for the language and characters.

What to do:

  1. Hand out a photo copy of pages 42-43
  2. Students would go around the room and  read a paragraph at a time, just reading the words
  3. Three students would then go up and read the parts Miranda, Narrator that is in dialog, Narrator that is talking to the audience.
  4. Teacher and students would talk about what they think is going on here, Teacher would give a little introduction about the book
  5. Students would then determine, as a group of directors, how the characters should act for the scene.
  6. A different group of students would then perform the scene

Homework:

Write a journal entry what about what you collect, or what have you collected in the past.  Explain why.

The class was a success if:

-students were able to get through the language

-students were intrigued by the scene, if they are wondering what happened and why it happened

-students were able to act and direct the scene (understand the text)
