Day 16

 

What’s on for today:

 

Examine what Miranda is doing by comparing Ferdinand to such characters to famous literary characters

 

What to do: 

 

1)      students will read 217-223 out loud around a circle, students have already read Catcher in the Rye and The Old Man in the Sea.

2)      Students will discuss how Holden Caulfield wants everything pure and real which is similar to Ferdinand

3)      Students will discuss how Ferdinand wants to kill nature, like The old man in the sea.

4)      Discuss how Miranda is making herself immortal and beautiful by writing her journal, much like Ferdinand does with his butterflies.

5)      Students will read together  Sonnet #118 by William Shakespeare

6)      Students will go around the room and act out the literal images of the sonnet line by line

 

Homework:

 

Students will write a journal entry comparing the sonnet #118 with Miranda and Ferdninand. Read pages 270-285

 

The class was a success if :

 

-         students were able to see the connection between all the literary characters

-         students were able to understand the idea of immortality through literature

-         student were able to connect the images of the sonnet and act them out

-         student were able to see the connection between the sonnet and the novel
