| Divine was born Glenn Milstead in 1945. Throughout the 70's Divine played the lead role in John Waters many movies, most notably Pink Flamingos (1974) and Female Trouble (1976). It was in Pink Flamingos (1974) that Divine gained notoriety as an outrageous performer and a scene involving Divine consuming dog 'crap' became the focal point of the movie and lead thousands to turn out to see it making it a huge success in late night theaters, playing for many years and achieving cult status for not only the movie and it's director but also it's larger than life star, Divine! Divine followed up her role in Pink Flamingos (1974) in John Waters Polyester (1980). The movie was not a major success like it's predecessor but showed of Divine's range in portraying over the top female characters. It was not long before Divine put her acting roles on hold in pursuit of a career as a hi-nrg dance diva. Hi-nrg disco records were huge in Europe at the time and nobody made them quite like Divine. With her rough as nails voice and outrageous performances Divine made it big in the disco world and it wasn't long before Divine made it big on the pop charts. In 1984 after recording several dance tracks with producer Bobby Orlando, Divine teamed up with one of the 80's most successful producers, Stock, Aitken and Waterman. The team gave Divine a huge hit with You Think You're A Man (1984) which peaked at #16 on the UK Official Top 75 Singles Chart. An appearance on the BBC's weekly Top Of The Pops earned Divine a lifetime ban from the show due to a record number of complaints from viewers. A record she still holds to this day. Divine followed it up with I'm So Beautiful (1985), Walk Like A Man (1985) and Twistin' The Night Away (1985) all making the UK Official Top 75 Singles Chart. Divine also released an album Maid In England (1985) which didn't chart. Divine returned to acting in Lust In The Dust (1985) which also starred Tab Hunter and Lanie Kazan. It was a comedy western about buried treasure and like Many of Divine's films has gone on to gain cult status. Divine took a male role in Trouble In Mind (1985) which also starred Kris Kristoferson. Divine played Hilly Blue, a notorious crime lord. Divine's next major role was in Hairspray (1988). Shortly before the film opened Divine died. |
