Dear
Given the level of violence that has just occurred in Colorado, I feel compelled to demand that
some action be taken to control gun violence in this country. As a parent, I feel for the parents of the
victims of this violence including the children who perpetrated it.
With that said, my request is that you and other members of our government redouble your efforts
to curb these types of incidents. Please don't allow threats from the NRA or other such extreme
organizations to sway you from what you know is right.
That being said, I believe it is my duty to provide suggestions rather than expect that my responsibility
ends with my informing you of my viewpoint.
First of all, if we are going to continue allowing every American to own guns, we need to tie that to
mandatory gun safety courses BEFORE the firearm would be released to the buyer. That would include
keeping guns locked and out of reach of children and criminals who might otherwise gain access to them
In addition, if a gun is used in the commission of any crime, regardless of actual injury, the person
responsible should receive mandatory jail time. Even if the owner of the gun is not the perpetrator of the
crime, I believe they should also be held accountable when it can be proved they did not take adequate
care to keep it out of the hands of children or criminals.
I don't believe our founding fathers could have imagined the proliferation of firearms nor should they
have been expected to. The suggestions I've made would not impinge on anyone's right to keep and bear
them, it would simply make those who wish to do so accountable for any violence that results from that
ownership.
Thank you very much for your time, consideration, and patience in reading this. Needless to say, I am
highly motivated to end such tragic events.
Sincerely,
