Sarah
Winchester
Construction of the Winchester Mansion began in 1884 and continued until September 5, 1922. The owner of this mansion was, Sarah Winchester wife to William W. Winchester. The two were wed on September 30, 1862 in New Haven. Four years later on July 15, 1866 Sarah gave birth to a daughter named Annie Pardee Winchester. Annie contracted an illness called "Marasmus" and died on July 24. Sarah was shook by her daughters death and began to withdraw into herself and was on the brink of going mad. It took nearly a decade for her to overcome the tragety and lead a normal life but her and William never had another child. Sarah returned to her family home, when another tragedy would fall upon her. William the heir to the Winchester fortune became ill with pulmonary Tuberculosis. He died on March 7, 1881, leaving Sarah 20 Million dollars and 48.9 percent of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company with an income of about $1000 a day, non taxable until 1913.
Sarah was in a deep grieving process, not only for her husband but also her lost child and the new wealth could not ease the pain of the tragedy. A friend suggested she see a medium about her losses so she did. The medium told her that her that her husband came through telling of a curse on the family which took he and her daughters lives and would soon take her too. The curse was because of the weapon built with the family name which killed thousands of people who's spirits wanted revenge. She was told to sell the property and head toward the setting sun with her husband as her guide and when she found her new home she would recognize it. She was told to build onto the house for her and all the spirits of those thier rifle had killed and to never stop building, if she did she would die. After the seance she packed up and moved to California, believing she was guidied by her late husband. She reached her destination in 1884, and bought a six bedroom 162 acred home from a Dr. Caldwell which was under construction. She began construction building whatever she wanted to, and had workers working 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Sarah had no master bluprints for the house, but she met with workers everyday to go over her hand drawn scetches for the days building. As the weeks and months past the house grew to be seven stories high. The House had many oddities like stairs leading into roof, balconys with no entrances, doors leading into walls, doors that dropped off to the ground, windows leading to other rooms and lots more unusual stuff. Sarah also had a facination for the number 13 many structures are associated with the nuber 13. Some rooms have 13 windows, all staircases have 13 stairs except one, and even a 12 fixtured light socket was adjusted to be 13 fixtures and more. The house was built maze like to confuse and discourage the vengeful spirits. The house reached to full seven stories in 1906. Sarah continued to live here never having visitors living with only her servants and the company of spirits, It was said she communicated with the spirits to get the designs for the house. The Great Sanfrancisco Earthquake destroyed a major part of the Winchester estate knocking down the top three stories into the garden, never to be rebuilt.

Epantion of the house began once more, There were chimneys everywhere having no purpose, old stories say that ghosts travel to and from houses through chimneys. Its also been documented that Sarah only had 2 mirrors installed throughout the whole house because she believed ghosts were afraid of their own reflection. On September 4, 1922, after a spirit session in the seance room, Sarah went to her bedroom for the night where she never woke up. She died at the age of 83. She had a safe but when opened it was foun only to contain locks of her daughter and husbands hair along with their obituaries from the news paper. It is also said she had 13 wills signed 13 times leaving everything to her niece but never mentioning what she wanted done with the house. Now it is an open tourist attraction for all to come and see the strange yet wonderful creation from Sarah Winchester.
