Where is Jamaica?

Jamaica is the third largest of the Caribbean islands. Situated
in the Caribbean Sea, it lies 965.4 km (600 miles) south of
Florida, (USA) 160.9 km (100 miles) southwest of Haiti and 144.81 km
(90 miles) south of Cuba. It is in the Western hemisphere
between North and South America.

Jamaica was taken over from its original inhabitants (The Taino Indians)
by Christopher Columbus in 1494 for the country of Spain.
It was taken from Spain in 1655 by the British, who ruled it
until August 6th 1962...Jamaica's Independence day.
It now has its own government, but is still a member of the
British Commonwealth.
The name Jamaica was derived from the country's Taino Indian name
"XAYMACA"
which means "Land of wood and water"

Jamaica is 4,411 Sq Miles (10,999 Sq Kilometers)
Or
146 miles (234 Kilometers) Long by 51 miles (82 Kilometers) wide.

See if you can find Kingston where I was born...lol...lol

Jamaica is dominated by magnificent mountains, that run
through the center of the Island from west to east.
Lovely beaches (some of the best in the world) can be found
on the North and South coasts of Jamaica.

Jamaica's national motto is "Out of Many, One People"
Because in Jamaica there are,
 African 76.3%, Afro-European 15.1%, East Indian and Afro-East
     Indian 3%, white 3.2%, Chinese and Afro-Chinese 1.2%, other 1.2%

Jamaicans are generally generous and naturally friendly people.
Inspired by the natural beauty of the island, the society is
very musical and artistic.

Our most famous saying is;
"No problem"

Patois  (a derivative of African, French and Spanish languages) is spoken
by the majority of the people.  English is the official language of the people of Jamaica.
English is spoken and understood by all Jamaicans.

Jamaica is well known to be the birthplace of Reggae Music.
It is one of Jamaica's most popular exports and is known
all over the world. (If you don't know it you are sleeping :)
Song writers and Musicians such as Bob Marley
Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff and even me "Jamgent", have helped to
spread Reggae music worldwide.
Soca and Calypso has been adopted from  the Eastern
Caribbean Islands.
Jamaicans also listen to and play other kinds of music as well.

The annual average temperature is 80 degrees F. (27 degrees C.).
