Golden Globe 1999 Nominees
The Golden Globes, seen as a forerunner to the
Oscars next year, announced its list of nominees for this year. It would
be too naive to say that there were many big surprises, but one notable
omission is Tom Hanks and his critically acclaimed new movie "The Green
Mile". NY Film Critics Circle Best Film Winner "Topsy Turvy" (Michael Leigh)
was not in the nomination list as well. The overwhelming favourite was
"American Beauty" (which one critic called the best movie ever made about
a dysfunctional American family) which garnered six nominations, including
Best Film (Drama), Actor (Kevin Spacey), Actress (Anette Bening) and Director
(Sam Mendes). "The Talented Mr Ripley" came in second with five nods, including
one for Matt Damon, who lost 20 pounds, and played a villian in this remake
of a French movie (I think it was called "The Sun"), which starred French
hearttrhob, Alan Delon. Julianne Moore scored nominations in both Best
Actress categories for her performances in "The End Of The Affair (Drama)
and "An Ideal Husband" (Musical/Comedy). Tom Cruise, who is widely tipped
to win the Oscar this year for his riveting supporting performance in "Magnolia"
is nominated together with Haley Joel Osment for "The Sixth Sense". The
ceremony will be held on 23rd January. Winners are indicated in red and
bold characters.
