William ROCHE from Cork, Ireland married Bridget Grace Blake from Ireland in St. Joseph's Church, New York City, July 3, 1859. Mary Blake was a witness. Wm. was a Pvt. in the 37th NY Inf. Reg. "G" Co., "The Irish Rifles," June 1861-1863. He and Bridget appear next in San Francisco in 1870 when Wm. was re-enlisted by Col. Abner Doubleday into the US Cavalry. By 1877 he is at Ft. lapwai, ID, Terr. with "E" Co., 1st US Cavalry, and now the father of four children. On his 18th wedding anniversary, July 3, 1877 Pvt. Wm. ROCHE was killed in action during an aborted rescue attempt of an Army Scout in Cottonwood Canyon, ID. Bridget continued to live at Ft. Walla Walla, then at 901 Poplar St. in Walla Walla, WA. until her death about 1904. By 1900 Bridget is also raising her oldest daughter Joanna Mullis' four young girls. Wm. and Bridget's 3rd child Margaret "Lizzie" Darmstadt nee Roche was my grandmother. Nothing else is known about any Roche or Mullis family member.*
