Burning In

Often when making a print we find a bright area of the print where there is detail in the negative but it is not materialising. By selecting these areas and giving only them an added exposure it is possible to bring out the detail. In some cases to achieve the correct exposure the burning In exposure may take 3 to5 times as long as the main exposure. The same technique as for dodging can be used to cut out an exact mask shape. When dodging or burning in it is important to keep the mask some distance from the paper surface as this keeps the mask edge out of focus, and also to keep the mask moving. With some practice a great deal of information that would normally be hidden is revealed in the final print.
