About IPC
The International Photographic Council
(IPC), a multinational, non-profit, non-commercial
organization, is composed of representatives
from every major sector of the
photographic industry. Founded in 1974, the
IPC is dedicated to increasing worldwide recognition
of photography as a universal means
of communication, through the adoption of
a motto, "Peace through Understanding,
Understanding through Photography, the
Universal Language."
An early major achievement by the IPC
took place in 1978 when the U.S. Postal
Service issued a commemorative stamp honoring
photography. Industry and government
leaders said the stamp would help stimulate
greater public interest in photography as a
universal communications medium.
In 1983 the United Nations officially recognized
the IPC as a Non-Governmental
Organization associated with the U.N. Since
then, both organizations have co-produced
many photographic exhibitions addressing
serious and major global issues such as Aging,
Population Growth, Endangered Species and
other subjects of universal interest. In addition
to being displayed at U.N. Headquarters
in New York, these exhibitions are circulated
to selected international locations.
As a photographic industry association,
the IPC promotes and encourages photog
-
raphy not only through international exhibi
-
tions and conventions, but with scholar
-
ships, through key business and professional
speakers, and other programs of interest
.
It is
the only photographic industry organization
which communicates the benefits of photography
outside the industry.
The IPC looks forward to a promising future
with a continuation of current programs and
development of new and exciting projects.
