Dear James,
I was really disappointed a big time when
I recevied your e-mail this morning about the closure
of your wonderful Java site. I did not expect that it
would happen, if you do not know Java then how could
you have attracted so many programmers around the
world?. Me like many Java programmers learned so much
about J2EE programming through your website otherwise
it would have been impossible to do, not even Sun
would have thought us that much clearly.
James please reconsider your current decision, we need
you, me like others were bogged down with theoretical
details about J2EE programming but you are the one who
showed us the practical way to use it, ofcourse, it
does not eliminate the need to learn J2EE theory but
your approach provides the clear way to translate the
theory into practical application.
Forget about the Sun Micro peoples they
can not provides the details like you do in Java, you
are the best.
Again, reconsider your decision, we need your
contribution to Java community.
One of your best friend, originally from TN
India,currently living in Ottawa,Canada.

Thank You for you great contribution. Your knowledge is really
extensive.
I have a knowledge base system on Oracle 9i. I'm planning to write Web
interface for it using AS9i.
I want to use:
- mod_plsql (I'm familiar with it)
- Servets and JSP (new for me)
Could you tell me what's better to use: Servlets or JSP. Don't know
why, but
Servlets seem better for me.
May be my question is incorrect and right question woul be the
following.
Could you explain where (in what situation) to use JSP and where -
Servlets.

Hi James
First of all thank you for presenting such a great and
informative site to all of us beginners.
The reason why I am interested in Java is because the company
I work for has taken a new approach for developing business applications.
For years we have used a 4GL language called Accell by UNIFY and we are finally making a move towards the future
with a new development environment called UNIFY NXj.
The language is Java based with accelerated design time with features like
embeded SQL and JDBC connectivity. Although the environment does not
require developers to learn hard core java it fully supports
.JSP and .JAVA files , great for building exception handling or adding extra functionality.
Although I am keen on learning traditional Java , I must say this is a better solution
for our environment where there are literally hundreds of applications that need to be
ported and either rebuilt with a new set of logic or hopefully just ported and maintained.
If we were to use even JBuilder it would take us ages before getting anything
done with the limited time and shortage of training.
All related info can be found on www.unify.com as well as a free ,
fully functional evaluation copy.
Once again, thanks for everything, the application I downloaded some time
ago has been a great help with beggining to learn Java and JSP.

But the porblem is if the internal Frame is already Open then also

accompanied with one more tab i.e. no of tab in the frame is equal to
the no of times the sub menu has been clicked.
i am attaching the code here expecting that u will help me

I've been following your code on planet-source-code and
i think its and an absolute light at the end of the tunnel.
I've actually manage to learn a thing or two from your code.
I'm currently doing Java as a subject. Would it in anyway be possible for
you to take a look at the attached document, its the specifications of
one of my Java tasks, and to maybe give me some hints or ideas as to
where to begin and what to do, or maybe to steer me into some sort
of a direction. Like i said i really admire your work and
your ability to program so well and no i'm not just saying so just
to get you to take a look at it.lol.
I realise that you might be busy, but if you could just take
5 minutes of your time(even if its to say..get lost!!!lol)
to respond, your input would be highly appreciated.
Thank you for taking time to read this mail.

before I can successfully compile the servlet. I cannot use
javac HelloWorld.java

high version of tomcat and struts it works perfect just like in your tutorials.
I have some few questions below that bother me in your tutorials
1. What are the functions of your .xml files?
2. How does this xml files called in your jsp files?
3. What software will I use to create xml files?
THANKS for your tutorials because it helps me a lot in java programming.
I hope you'll create more in the future.

James,
I am currently undertaking a university project and was viewing example
code at Planet Source Code when I came across your program.
I am trying to link a Java application to an MS Access database.
I was wondering if you could explain a few things for me.
Firstly, do I need a special JDBC driver to do this (if so where would I get one?)
or is there one provided with the J2SDK?
Would you have a small sample code to get me started or to explain the
basics? (before I get into the more complicated stuff).
I got lost trying to follow your detailed example as I did not
understand your initial instructions.
Your help is much appreciated.
Many thanks and Kind regards,
Jamie

if you remember I had mailed you a couple of times a few weeks ago.
I had spoken about a billing system I was working on using Java(swing, jdbc).
I have got it working. there is part of the code where i'm getting it to connect to the printer.
alongwith some people I was working i've been using the code below to connect and print the bill.
but I am not aware of the exact working of this code. as in what streams it is
connecting to and the classes it is using.
-------------------------------------------
PrinterJob job = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
job.setCopies(1);
job.setPrintable(new PrintObject());
if (job.printDialog())
{
try {
job.print();
}catch (PrinterException e) { System.out.println(e); }
--------------------------------------
could u explain what is happening in each of these lines,
also the classes stream used.
do reply as soon as possible.
thanking you

How you pass this information throughout the differents form to make the querys.

hello james,
This is my question in detail
when the client(browser)requests the server(tomcator any java server),request in the
sense we will open a servlet and in that servlet we will have a link when we click
that link say ex:audio a new java applet kind of window will be opened where in we
will get a mp3 file saved in the server and in that file which is running we should
get a text(that can be anythng and anywhere in the song or anything,i.e in can come
in the starting or middle or ending). As far as I have learned in mp3 file we will
have some place left misclleneously where in we can include a text it seems.
its like titles in a movie.
That is the question,I am sorry for not giving you properly.I also learned
more only after asking you.If you did not understand any part of my please
give me a message i will try to say in more detail.here is a link where
u can see similar example way i am asking but in the below link a real
time player will come and the server is some server,i meant not java. But
the output is the same.like if you click on the audio link you can see
that.

Subject: requesting help for my project work
To: [email protected]
hi Sir,
whenever i have doubt in java i visit ur site and have used many of ur codings.
thanks a lot Sir for the great work u r doing.
im currently working on a project for my academic purpose.
my question:
i got a login page in jsp - when submit is clicked - i go to another jsp pg which has got usebean set & getproperty
from here i need to pass control to a servlet. - the servlet is a controller.
the jdbc connection object just need to be instantiated here.
(so i need to have a seperate class for connection).
the servlet has to track from where the request has come and pertaining to that pass
control to a process class. the process class will need to decide on the specific
action and direct another jsp/class to do so.
i need in general to do it as follows:
1.jsp
2.uibean
3.controller servlet
4.action bean
5.view bean
6.view object.
all database activities(insert, update, delete..) need to be in a generic process.
i need to have just one servlet program and do the above.
can u just tell me the way i have to do it. i need some example coding also.
thanks a ton & with kind regards,

1)Are all 22 classes java servlets.
2)The file searchservlet.java comes up with an error(shown below). Is
the
class for this file used in the program? The error is:
C:\tomcat\webapps\examples\WEB-INF\classes\searchservlet.java:39:
incompatible types
found : char
required: java.lang.String lastchar = wordnow.charAt(wlen);
3) How are the servlets linked to the database? Do they use the JDBC?
Ps can u recommend any java servlets or other sources of information on
servlets that may be useful to me since I have not used servlets
before.
Eternally grateful

hi James;
first of all, thank u very much. i didn't think that will consider my request.
i've done what u asked me. I know that it is too much to ask u what i want.
i'm sure that u r a very busy person. U have ur own work and studies.
But if u really had some free time, will u explain for me what this line means:
var x1 = document.form1.FirstName.value;
moreover, i checked the site and really tried to make my resume but i didn't
know how to sign out after filling my personal data and saving it.
I told u that SUBMIT button will not appear but there is a visible SAVE button.
SUBMIT is clicked when the applicant feels that he will never change his
profile but saving is used to store that data in the database for further
modifying in the future, tomorow or even after 1 year.
to explain my idea on the site u gave me. save will appear all the time
instead of cancel but submit will only show when the person fills the
personal details, work profile and references.
One more point, in ur program that i picked from planet-source-code (paret2).
i saw modrec.java,modrecresp.java and modrecresp2.java.
Do i have to do the same when i design my servlet.
Is there a record function and a response for that function.
Your kindness and caring encouraged me to ask u.
i do appreciate it for u even if u didn't replay.
yours;

I'm a college student and I need such a web site .
I found your work done at the pscode.com and found it best of all.
In continuation I tried your jewllery site.I followed all those steps that u
have told in "readme" file.
But at step to compile the ".java" files my compiler refused to compile it .
Each file generated 6-10 errors.
I started thinking over the reason but probably its beyond my sense.
Thats y I'm writing to u this mail message.
Please write me back the appropriate solution for the problem.
I'll be highly thankful to you.
The errors were like the statements as under:
1)ShowCart.java:110:package javax.servlet does not exist
import javax.servlet.*;
2)ShowCart.java:111:package javax.servlet.httpdoes not exist
import javax.servlet.http*;
etc.

I have two questions:
1. when i enter a name and run a search, it gives me an error.
when i do a genral search it gives me the entire list of names in the db. why is that?
2. is there a version with more comments? i am new to programming,
and i cannt understand what evrything in your program means...
I thank you for posting this program, it is teaching me alot about database/java.

I was looking for an application that show me some concepts of JDBC

just great. But when and get the zip file and unzipped I could see that this

another program written that lets you proceed to the

Where does the employee table come in? What does
the keyword table do? Also little confused as to
why there has been no relationships set up in the

Subject: Help
Hi James,
I'm teaching myself Java and I'm attempting some JDBC stuff.
I'm writing a simple address book - well,
I thought it would be simple but I'm stuck on some things:
1. I want to populate a JList box from a database. (I'm using MySQL.)
2. I have a JComboBox that must list some suburbs.
3. From this box, the user should be able to select a suburb, or
4. start typing in a suburb. If they start typing a suburb,
I would like it to auto-complete the suburb. So for example, if the user types 'E',
the first suburb starting with 'E' should appear with all the
letters after 'E' being highlighted. If they then type an 'a' ('Ea')
then the first suburb beginning with 'Ea' should appear and so on,
until the user is finished typing the name or chooses to accept the auto-completed suburb.
5. If the suburb doesn't exist,
I want a pop-up asking the user if they'd like to add the new suburb to the database.
I don't know where to begin so any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Lavinia

brother's e-mail account.
Hi Mr.James Smith. How are you? I was really a big
surprise for me to get your e-mail and I would like to
thank you very much for replying me.
I try what you had say to me. It stops the exceptions,
but it does not show the any results. only the names
of the fields were coming without any results. I make
sure that I have set the User DSN. (How did I access
the project without the username and password?). I
make sure also that there are some records in the the
database. what could be probably the problem?
Thank you for everything.

Hi Pal,
I am just a friend that is into Java programming just like you.
I saw your work on JDBC on planet-source-code site.
It was great.I am currently working on a project that demands
for JDBC connection pool.I have created an entry window and
I want a situation whereby I can access the database behind.
I would type a username and a password and click on a command button.
I expect a situation whereby a search is done through the database
and once the user is verified He or She will now have access
to the main application window. Please could you do me a favour by
explaining every bit of what I need to do to achieve this.
If possible let me have the codes.
Thanks
A friend

Date: Fri, 30 May 2003 13:54:40 +0000
Hello James,
I've downloaded and analyzed your file, it really gives a clear
understanding on how working with databases in java is.
The reason why i am writing to you, as a fellow programmer ( very
novice by the way ) is because i have one question and i don't really know where
to get it answered, and i thought that maybe u could provide me with some
advice or help.
I have to do a program very similar to yours, a database connection,
retrieveing and updating records.
The problem is that it is for macintosh.
So i have n idea how to work with the databsde part on a mac, I've read
and done some research but haven't really found anything helpfull.
Everything i've done before is through access, and mac does not handle access
databases.
So all in all, any help or advice or suggerence would be appreciated
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have read your code on the planet source code
website. Its very good and informative. I am working
on a small program and I am in need of some help. I
would be greatful to you if you can advice me a bit on
this problem.
I am new to Java programming and so I am finding it
a bit difficult to know the right direction.
The problem is as follows. I have to maintain a XML
database in one machine and then connect to it from an
other machine using a Java application. I should be
able to update and retrieve the data from the remote
machine. It would be great if you can suggest me as to
how to proceed with this and advice me as to what kind
of material should I read so that I will be in a
position to accomplish this task.
Thank you very much for your time and patience

Hi James,
I found your porgram to be extremely helpful in helping me design my own
database system using Access. However i cant seem to get my head around the
query section of your program. It seems to work well until i set a condition
then it starts to have heartattacks.
For example if i want to view student name and address of every male
student it will fail, with this error,
java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Too few parameters. Expected 1.
Do you have any ideas??
Cheers
Dave
