Grand Canyon - July 1999 - Page 4

What you can kind of make out in the picture to the right here is a cave at the base of the cliff.  We were informed on another trip that this was a solution cave - a real cave that happened to have been exposed by the downward cutting action of the river.  What you can't really tell from here is just how big this cave is.  It's actually about the size of a football field and about 30 feet high at the front.  We stopped there briefly.  Sandy was playing bag pipes.  Another group was there.  Some of them were throwing a frisbee around, but there was plenty of room for all of us.  Angie has a photo of a previous trip where they had set up a volleyball net and were playing volleyball inside this cave.  It's huge.

Well, the days passed very quickly.  Did I tell you it rained a lot?  I did, I think.  Five days of rain.  Just amazing.  Anyway in the picture below, you can see the last camp of the first half of the trip.  Left to right it's David, Greg and Angie.  This camp we called Shantytown.  Most camps we were able to spread out and not be too close to our neighbors.  This camp was pretty small and so the tents were set up in rows toward the front of this sandy beach.  Toward the back was the kitchen.  There was a bit of an overhang at the back where the beach met the cliffs and this gave a small amount of shelter from the rain.  We even had a stream running off the hill (to the left in the picture) and down to the river.

The picture to the right is of the same camp looking upstream.  One of the nice things about the rain was when the sun came out, the canyon was especially beautiful.

The picture to the left is looking downstream from Shantytown.  Despite the wet and cramped quarters, this was a very beautiful camp.
