 We
had hoped to do some volunteer work at Dinosaur National Monument.
We were scheduled to do some survey work but the ranger bagged out on us
at the last minute. So we had about a week to read, repair gear,
write letters home, go to Colorado National Monument, Timpanogos Cave
National Park, Salt Lake City and to explore Dinosaur National
Monument. We were a little disappointed and I especially had a
hard time changing gears but it was definitely worth it.
Here I'm reading a little Shakespeare. I brought the complete works - but only finished about 5 of the earliest plays. We also spent a lot of time identifying birds here. This was where we positively identified Brewer's Blackbird and the Mourning Dove. We also saw a big fat Robin baby hoping around the tree above us and on the ground. Toward the Bassett Cabin at the end of the scenic driving tour, there are a number of petroglyphs which were some of the most extraordinary I had seen. I recommend highly taking a the time to follow the hyperlinks of each of the pictures to see the details.
The lizards on this image are actually about 7 or 8 feet long and yes they are up above the ground a fair amount. My guess is that they put together ladders from which they could make these petroglyphs. These are likely Fremont Culture. |
