gc - deer creek falls.jpg (219964 bytes)Deer Creek holds one more surprise for us.  It runs out of the rock face departing the narrows as a waterfall.  This waterfall has lowered its exit point about 10 feet in 150 years or so.  That's some pretty amazing down cutting.

gc - butt dam - matkatameba.jpg (65653 bytes)A bit further on one comes to Matkatamiba where it's pretty traditional to build a butt dam.  Some people get into it in more or less elaborate ways.  Some want to simply plug the stream up and everyone gets up at once to see the flood of the catastrophic dam failure sweep down the creek bed.  Others like to put bridges and houses along the edges of the river.  Regardless, I think it's mostly just a silly way to get wet!  And I enjoy it thoroughly.
