Western Europe Trip 2 - Page 7

cornfield and tree in the mountains - vangogh.jpg (24194 bytes)Ahhh Van Gogh.  There are two museums in the Netherlands that have significant numbers of Van Goghs - the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam and the Kroeller-Muller Museum near Arnhem.  When I was at the museum in Amsterdam, I sat in front of each Van Gogh for 10 or 15 minutes trying to absorb it.  How can you?  The movement, the color.
the ravine - vangogh.jpg (29559 bytes) This is another Van Gogh called The Ravine.  There are many popular Van Gogh paintings.  Both of these museums have others that are just as stunning and moving.  If you get to the Netherlands, I recommend getting to these museums at all costs.

Until I saw the Van Goghs, Salvador Dali had been my favorite painter.  No longer.

Anemoon - henstenburgh.jpg (9346 bytes)This is Anemoon by H. Henstenburgh who lived between 1667 and 1726. The color, the starkness against the dark background invest this painting with more meaning than a simple portrait of a flower.  Stunning.  This is in the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels.

deux mannequins - chirico.jpg (101452 bytes)This is Deux mannequins by Giorgio de Chirico around 1920.  This painting is also in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels.
