From
Krakow I journeyed by bus to Auschwitz and Birkenau. It's is just a
numbing place of death. You have to ask the questions about whether
the living envied the dead, what the people in the surrounding town were
doing while all these people were being put to death. 75% of the
people arriving were killed to the sound of a polka band. The
incinerators were placed strategically close to the gas chambers to
improve efficiency. You just have no way of understanding the
magnitude of the horrors.
Here's
the sad thing about this - on the train in Bulgaria I was speaking with
someone about the NATO action in Kosovo. I compared Slobodan
Milosovic to Hitler and he turned to me and said "well you know that
the Jews are in control of the world." Wish he had come with
me.
