Pompeii - City Destroyed by Volcanic Eruption |
Vesuvius, releasing steam; 1944 AD. This is not nearly the catasrophic eruption that occured on August 24th, 79. That was when Vesuvius blew its top! The result was many thousands of cubic meters of volcanic ash coverering the entire city of Pompeii, smothering all its citizens! |

The eruption of this volcano brought a sudden and complete end to the city of Pompeii. Pliny the Younger (AD 61-113), in a letter to his friend, Tacitus, described the grief he experienced at the tragic loss of his Uncle, Pliny the Elder, who, along with a multitude of residents of Pompeii, was killed. (Pliny the Younger was 18 years old at the time.)  Pliny's Letter to Tacitus |
