The Lotus Esprit - probably
the most well-known Lotus model ever!
Be intended as the successor
of the LOTUS EUROPA, Colin Chapman was looking for a new, outstanding mid-engine
car concept. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro
by ItalDesign
and equipped with the new 907 Lotus-designed powerplant, this is the car
that launched LOTUS into the league of Supercar- makers. But most of the
popularity for the marque was attracted in 1977 by the James Bond film:'The
Spy Who Loved Me',
with Roger Moore sitting behind the wheel of his white Esprit S1.
But with *only* 160HP and 2
litre in the beginning, soon the customers demanded more power. The engine
was tweakened to 2.2 litres giving 184HP. Soon the Turbo was added, giving
the car the power, that it's looks deserved. In the late eighties
the 70's-design was carefully updated by Peter Stevens, who also penned
the Excel.
The LOTUS ESPRIT, a timeless
beauty, is still in production since more then twenty years now!
