MODERN JAZZ TERMS

 

NEUTRAL POSITION Standing with feet parallel shoulders width apart and armsrelaxed at side.
FLATBACK Bending forward from the waist. Keeping the spine straight from tailbone to crown of the head.
RIPPLE Rolling through the spine inward from the coccyx to the head.
HINGE Bending at the knees and keeping the torso (from crown to knee) straight.
LATERAL In 2nd position, arms extended, torso bends at hips (not waist) to the side.
PARALLEL SWING Swing the torso in flatback position from one side to the other while torso remains parallel to flr.
RELEASE SWING Swing the torso from one side to the other by release the spine and dropping the torso down.
FLATBACK ARCH BACK From a lateral, the torso twists so that the chest faces the ceiling, torso remains parallel to flr.
STRIKE POSE On one leg, bent from torso so that chest goes to thigh, gesture leg in attitude, arms reach to gesturing leg.
STRIKE TURN Turning while in the strike pose.
