Catch Up With Jamelia
Jamelia is back with a new track and has the likes of Justin Timberlake inviting her to support him on his UK tour. The lucky girl spills the beans
How you doing? Your single is out this week. You exploded on the UK RnB scene, your debut single was in the Top 5 - then you disappeared. We heard the news you were having a baby... How is she?
She is absolutely wonderful, beautiful, excellent!

What's her name?
Her name is Tajah.

Has it been difficult balancing a career and being a mother at the same time?
I would say its only difficult emotionally because I miss my baby when Im away from her, but apart from that, its all good. Its so exciting and Im loving every minute of being back and, you know, Tajah is into it too, so its cool.

Well - look at what she's come from - I bet she dances around doesnt she?
Oh gosh, my daughter is crazy - next time you interview me I will bring her.

Hows it been recording the new album and getting back into the swing of things? You were on a mad rollercoaster on your debut - has it been difficult?
It hasnt been difficult, in fact its been easier. Everything is so familiar - the recording and interview process everything that surrounds being a singer Im used to it. Its good. Im really enjoying myself this time around, Im so much happier - I dont know what it is!

How has the baby influenced your music?
I think because I have someone in my own house who looks up to me as a role model, Im definitely a bit more positive. Every track on my album has a good message its not a deep and meaningful album theres nothing on there like 'you left me, Im so sad, my life is over!

It didnt take you long to get on the bandwagon - I mean Justin Timberlake called you to support him on his UK tour.......
The thing is I wasnt doing anything and I was like Why? He's asked me to be on the second part of the tour in November or December. I'm not showing off or anything! (laughs)

So it's out this week - how do you feel about being back? Quite a few things have changed in the last few years - the whole music industry has changed...
Its good, Im very surprised how the whole music industry seems a totally different place but in a good way, but I think urban music is so much more acceptable nowadays which is very good for me - just slide right in!

How important do you see your new album in terms of where your first album was?
For me its a progressive album. It's an improvement on the first album. Im not moving in a different direction, just improving. My first album was my foundation and we just go from here.

Now you started as a girl and come back as a woman. What will happen to your music say between now and five years?
Im just intending to be successful and inspirational. I want to get to places that other UK urban artists havent got to - especially female. I mean Im pleased to see where Craig David has got, Im so pleased to see how Ms Dynamite has done and Mis-Teeq.

How do you feel about comparisons made between yourself and Ms Dynamite?
For me personally I love Ms Dynamite so if comparisons want to be made thats cool, but I dont feel we are comparable. She has her own style, to me we are not similar, we are two separate artists.

Lets talk about the new album and when am I getting my copy?
They wouldnt let me bring one! The new album is called 'Beauty and The Beast' and basically there are a few risks and hopefully the risks pay off. I absolutely love it. Im playing on fact the last time around people looked at me as a little girl and so this time Im showing you it aint like that!
