In line with Seminole County, I grade on the following scale:
90%-100%= A
80%-89%= B
70%-79%= C
60%-69%= D
59% and below= F
Writing assignments will be scored using a rubric of 0-6 with "0" representing an unscorable piece.
With a classroom full of students, disruptions affect everyone. A respectful learning environment is paramount for my students' success. With this in mind, I handle behavior problems respectfully as they occur. I expect my students to adhere to both school and classroom rules, in addition to following any verbal instruction given by an adult authority figure in the room. Students will always receive a warning before any action is taken. If the problem behavior continues, additional steps will be taken, as outlined below.
Each student is given a checkbook and register. The students will get "paid" each Monday and add the money to their accounts. If the student exhibits problem behavior after an initial warning, the student will be prompted to deduct a given amount from his/her checkbook. Checkbooks go home in Thursday Folders and will need to be signed by a parent. With this accountability, parents are kept informed of the students behavior throughout the week. The students will need $5.00 in their accounts at the end of the week in order to enjoy Fun Friday. Additional details about the steps in my behavior plan are listed below.
Step 2:
Money is deducted from student's account
The student deducts a given amount from his/her checkbook and signs the Bank
Ledger that will be shared with parents during future conferences.
Step 3:
Time to Think
The student will check his/her name in the Bank Ledger and additional money will
be debited. The student will then complete a "Time to Think"
form that will be signed by a parent and returned the next day.
Step 4:
Parent Phone Call
The student places another check next to his/her name in the Bank Ledger and a
final amount will be debited. The student is then sent to another
classroom to complete a written consequence, to be signed by a parent. Any
work that the student misses while out of the room will be added to his/her
homework. A parent is called and the parent and teacher will discuss an
appropriate consequence for the continued misbehavior.
Step
5: Discipline Referral
The student will receive a discipline referral and be sent to the office.
Students who exhibit good behavior can look forward to a number of positive reinforcements, such as notes home, Sunsational Awards, and certificates. The most frequent reward comes in the form of money added to their bank accounts. The students are then able to "spend" on class prizes including homework passes, treasure box, extra computer time, etc. Students can also choose to save their money and buy a ticket to the "Cagle Bank and Trust Celebration" at the end of each trimester.
Each week one student is selected as the "Super Star Student of the Week". This student receives special recognition in class and earns fabulous privileges for the week. Our Super Star Students are also recognized in our class newsletter.
Homework is given to reinforce concepts that have been covered in class. It is very important for students to complete their homework each night to help with the mastery of skills. Students are given homework in 2 subjects each night, Monday through Thursday and should take no longer than one hour to complete. If you find that your student is having difficulty completing the homework in this amount of time, please let me know as soon as possible. Students will be given all of the assignments at the beginning of the week so they may work ahead, however work is to be turned in on the appropriate day.
In addition to the daily homework assignments, the students are also required to read 120 minutes each week. They may read whatever they wish and you permit. Their reading is to be recorded on a Reading Log that is distributed to them every Friday. The Reading Log is then due the following Friday.
My desire is to have constant communication with all of my parents. With that said, I want to know how I can make that most convenient for you. You can reach me by phone or e-mail daily and we can schedule in person or telephone conferences when it's easiest. I like to meet with everyone at least once a trimester, but hope that we will be in communication much more frequently. If you desire a conference at any time, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Every
Thursday, your student will bring home a folder with all of the graded work for
the week. A
signing page is included in the folder that indicates the number of assignments
present. This page should be signed and sent back in the folder on Friday.
Assignments receiving an “A” or “B" should be removed and
reviewed/celebrated with your child. Assignments receiving below average
grades will require a signature and need to be sent back to school in the
folder. Assignments receiving “Cs” or below indicate that your student
hasn’t fully mastered the skill assessed.
To be the greatest help to your student, guide him/her in correcting the
errors on a separate sheet of paper. If the corrected work is
returned with the signed original work, the student will receive extra
credit on those assignments. If you have any questions about any of
the assignments in the folder, you may also attach a note to the work and send
it back in the folder. All of your student's checks and deposit slips are
also included in this folder to keep you informed of his/her behavior during the week.
The number of bank notes you should expect to see is shown on the sign
sheet. You may keep all returned bank notes, but the folder will always be
due back the next day.
Each night, your student will bring home his/her Take Home Folder. This folder will deliver any important school or class announcements for you to review. Please take time each night to remove the materials from the folder, check your child's planner, and sign accordingly. Your signature in the planner each night communicates to me that you received any notes in the folder. Please feel free to write questions or comments about any of the folder information in the planner along with your signature. This is a great way for us to communicate on a daily basis. Making it a part of your child's nightly routine will ensure that you are aware of all class happenings!
This is the general schedule that we adhere to each day:
8:30-9:00 Morning work, school announcements
9:00-9:44 Math Workshop Part I
9:45-10:25 Specials
10:25-12:00 Reading Workshop

We will be going on several field trips this year which are in line with our curriculum. With each trip, we will be needing parent chaperones to join us. In order to be eligible to be a chaperone on any of our trips, you must be approved as a dividend in Seminole County. Simply fill out an online dividend application at the Seminole County Public Schools website and contact me so that I know you have applied. Once permission slips go home, chaperones will be chosen on a first come first served basis. I look forward to having you join us on our adventures!
Each Friday, The Weekly Sunbeam will be sent home in your student's Take Home Folder. The Weekly Sunbeam is a newsletter for our class that provides some general information on the class events for the following week. Since I know many of you have hectic schedules to work with, the Sunbeam has the students' upcoming spelling and vocabulary words, along with notice of any tests or quizzes to be given the following week. The Sunbeam will also feature general notes about our classroom to keep you informed of what is going on in Portable 7. Look for this each Friday!
Should your child miss a day in our class, please send in a written note explaining the nature of the absence so that I can inform administration if the absence was excused. When your student returns, he/she will receive a make-up work folder. The student has as many days as he/she was absent to complete the work. For example, if the student was out for 3 days, he/she will be given 3 days to complete the make-up assignments. In most cases, if you are aware of the absence ahead of time, I am happy to send the work home in advance. I ask only that you give me enough notice to put it together beforehand. :0)
