An update to the above information as of March 14, 2003. Our Family companion, Glenwood, a Golden Retriever, passed away after suffering a heart attack while undergoing surgery  at the local vet. clinic to try and relieve some of his pain as a result of cancer. It was a sad day here and at the homes of our children and grandchildren. He was my constant companion and friend and never met anyone whom he didn't think was his friend. He loved to be around children and adults alike.

Our town , GORDON is about 15 miles from the South Dakota border and 120 miles from the Wyoming border. Not many settlers were in the area prior to 1884. Judge Tucker, the U.S. Commissioner at Valentine,Ne. convinced the Rev. John Scamahorn of Sullivan, IN. when they met at the Louisville Exposition in 1882 that the Northwest Nebraska territory was a "paradise for development". The next year the Rev. Scamahorn and a few of his friends came out to look the land over, upon returning home they organized a colony and in the winter 1884 he and 104 sturdy folks journeyed to rail's end at Valentine, NE. and then on west by means of ox drawn wagons. They set up their tents beside the "Lone Willow", the only tree of any size in the area, which was located east of the present site of GORDON.  A nine-trunked old willow tree still stands as a landmark to their campsite.
The Village of Gordon was incorporated in 1885 when they moved about a mile west of the orginal site to accommodate the men which were building the railroad. Rev. Scamahorn discouraged the use of his name for the town, instead suggesting it be named for John Gordon, whose ill-fated pilgrimage into the area in 1875 had resulted in the loss of his wagons and possessions.
