"Jason's 30th Birthday Party - Mine!" (2006)
I decided that for my own party I needed to do something special. I had chosen a Hawaiian Luau as a theme for my party and wanted something to encourage that idea. My initial designs were of an Hawaiian Island with a base map of my own surrounds overlayed onto the island as if they were the roads on the island. After deliberating with a few people it was decided that this idea although looked great wasn't that practical in that the roads were cut off and people unfamiliar with the area may not be able to read the map and find the party location. I totally changed the angle of approach and decided to overlay the base map over a backdrop of the Hawaiian Islands, and attempted in putting the location of the party on one of the islands but unfortunately that didn't work well. To do this I had rotated the islands and forgot to rotate them back, so for those of you who have been to Hawaii or know which way the Islands actually run, yes I do know they are on the wrong angle of orientation, but I realised this aftr printing all bar the last couple so I decided to leave them as such.
For this map I decided not to use a legend and used colour, and simple symbology to give the map meaning. The inset map does have a simple colour legend to help differentiate between School, Shops, and Parks, which are navigational landmarks to help find the party location.
For the background I chose a blend of colours to give the impression of a tropical sunset, and added a palm tree to enhance the theme. The string of Hawaiian Islands were coloured to give a slightly 3 feel and the surrounding water shaded to appear to be the crystal blue waters of the tropical climates.
The actual finished size is an A6 size (148 x 105mm) and printed on photographic paper with a gloss finish. The finshed result looked fantastic! This map also had an invitation on the reverse side which you can view here!
