What Really Happened

In the Cheeseburger Song

In the small city of Wibblestown, some time before VT came about, there lived four familiar faces.  Bob Tomato is one and Mr. Lunt, Jimmy and Jerry Gourd are the others.  Jimmy, Jerry, and Bob all went to school together at Wibblestown High.  Now Bob was fairly good friends with the gourds but he doesn’t come into this story much.

The Junior Prom was coming up and the three friends were all looking for dates.  Bob got up enough courage to ask out a blueberry.  Jimmy had no trouble asking Juanita Lunt, the daughter of Mr. Lunt.  Maybe you didn’t realize Mr. Lunt had a daughter or was even married, but answer this: Why would they call him Mr. Lunt if there weren’t a Mrs. Lunt?

Anyhow, Jimmy decided Juanita Lunt would be a good date since her mother is a magnificent cook.  Like mother like daughter right?  Jimmy was mistaken, for Juanita couldn’t even make toast.  Nevertheless, they went to prom.  If you’re wondering about Jerry, well, the poor chap was too shy to ask anybody and he really didn’t go for girls much like his brother did, so he played chauffeur, since he was the only one with a car.

Funny thing about Jerry’s car.  He bought it at a government surplus place as is, but it wouldn’t start.  When he took it in for a tune-up, the problem was the gas tank was filled with MONEY!  Jerry had bought it as is so the money belonged to him, but the government wrote him a check and took the cash as evidence.  It was just enough to pay for the car and repair it with about ten bucks left over, so he and Jimmy went out for slushies.  Note* The reason Jerry had to buy the car is because he’s a better driver than Jimmy, who can’t see over the wheel very well.

Anyhow, Jerry drove Jimmy and his date to prom.  After he dropped off Bob, who had a fight with his date and left early, and picked up Jimmy and Juanita, he was terribly hungry, having had nothing to eat since lunch which was just a bag of chips.  So he decided to stop at the local Burger Bell.

It was pretty late when Jerry pulled up to the drive through and asked for a cheeseburger and a milkshake.  The girl told him that they were closed until 10 am the next day.  Jerry pleaded, “Please!  I’m starving!  I haven’t eaten anything since lunch!  Just a cheeseburger!  I’ll stay here till ten if I have to!”  Nothing happened and Jimmy and Juanita were staring at him so he started to slowly drive out, when a girl came out of the building.  She was carrying a cheeseburger and a milkshake.  “Here,” she said.  “They were left over from today.  It’s on me.”  Jerry forgot all about being hungry and looked at the girl.  She too, was a gourd.  A yellow gourd with short brown hair and about the same size as Jerry.  The nametag on her apron said JENNY.  Jerry took the food and said, “Um…Do you need a lift?”  Jenny smiled, accepted the offer, and got in.  Jerry took her home, dropped off Juanita and drove home.  And to this day, Jimmy hasn’t given him peace, saying, “Jerry’s got a girlfriend!” while Jerry says, “She is NOT my girlfriend!”

Years later, Larry wrote the tune of the Cheeseburger Song, but didn’t think it was a typical silly song, so he gave it to Mr. Lunt.  Jimmy and Jerry knew he needed a story for the song and told him the story of Jerry in the drive-through, but only got as far as Jerry saying he’ll just wait until ten when Mr. Lunt walked off and made up the rest himself.  When Jerry was told to be in the video, he didn’t know what was going on, especially during the dream sequence.  When he saw the finished product, he was partly angry since that wasn’t the way it happened, but more glad because he didn’t want it to be a love song about him and Jenny.  Still, he (and Jimmy) knew that Jerry Gourd did not fall in love with a cheeseburger, but with the girl who brought it to him.
