Peter's Denial

Just a bigmouth fisherman I sat beside the fire
I tried to listen in as my best friend was there on trial
And then a woman said of me, “This man was a close friend.”
But I denied it telling her, “I do not know that man!”

What was I doing hanging round?
I should be through that gate and gone.
I should be through the gate and on my way back home.
What was I doing hanging round.

I turned away as she was speaking with the other women
And I couldn’t help but hear her say those things of me again.
“He follows him who claims to be the son of God above.”
And I said, “Woman I don’t know what you are speaking of.”

What was I doing hanging round?
I should be through that gate and gone.
I should be through the gate and on my way back home.
What was I doing hanging round?

I got away from them and took a little walk
When a man said, “You were with Him.  I can tell by how you talk.”
But I cursed myself and said to him, “That man I do not know!”
And just as I was saying this the cock began to crow.

What was I doing hanging round?
I knew he was the Son of God.
I knew He was the gate and only way back home.
What was I doing hanging round?
